Default DIY Halo idea

UPDATE: I decided the damage being done plus the risk I was taking was too great so I just decided to spray paint the outside of the lens and call it a day. As such I'm renaming the thread to focus on the EL Wire.

I tore my front end down to get to my fog lights because I wanted to paint inside the lens yellow. At the same time I said why not black out my headlights while I'm at it so I took those off too.

Followed some how to I found here and got the headlights disassembled and I tried baking the fogs too and the lens felt like it was coming loose but couldn't get them to separate without further damaging the housing .

My question: Is it possible, has anyone done it or am I just wasting my time?

One a side note I did make another discovery.

While I was prepping the parts to be primed I remembered I had some el wire laying around so I decided to play with it.

So this is aqua el wire(I have a Metallic Blue Box) and I plan to get white HIDs. I didn't do it all in one shot because the box had been modless for a year and a half and I'm pretty broke right now but wanted to get SOMETHING done.

I took a series of pics to to show light output. I took it outside and turned it on in my hand and it wasn't really noticeable unless you were looking for it but I know it'll work at night.

First is with the lights on, flash off

Lights on, flash on

Lights off, flash off

Lights off, flash on

And finally EL wire off

So what do you guys think? Should I run with it or what?

It was a 3-point tack down with tape to prove what could be done but I would use some crazy glue or other strong adhesive to secure so it looks like a circle(the wire is very flexible). Suffice to say I painted the lights and locked everything back up already because I need a driver for the lights that can take 12v and I wouldn't be able to leave my house for about a week waiting for that in the mail.

I guess I'll order the parts sometime down the road, maybe with my HIDs and see how that goes and update with pics if anything changes.

So good news and bad news.

Bad news first. I washed my car today and went to take pics (not sure if thats what you were referring drew) when I noticed that the left light had some condensation! Boy was I ____ed, I thought I sealed the hell outta that light.

Now on to the good news. I wasn't in any rush to do the halo mod as the (dis)assembly of the lights takes a little time but seen as I have to try and fix the seal I'll just order the parts anyways and try and get it done all in one shot.

Next update should be with halos!

Oh, almost forgot the pics

No changes to the fogs as the krylon I was using came out more like an uneven powder coat that just demolished visibility.

Regardless, Nice job! I can definitely understand your frustration, it takes tons of patients to cover the areas you don't want painted, sorry to here about the fogging..I added a few dabs of silicone in the areas were there was not much due to the OEM silicone coming apart. Here are some pics of mine...again nice job!

Thanks for the compliment Digon, your ride is looking super sweet and thanks even more for the DIY.

Now back to business.

Still hot from the oven!!!!

I think one looks a little more blue than the other though

I'll be putting them back on and giving that bad boy a wash to see if any of them are still leaking. More pics to follow.

I'd also like to wire it so that they come on when just the side markers come on, if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be awesome.

looks good. it was really easy to make my halos come on the same time as my blinker and parking lights on my first gen. just by splicing into the wires attached to the harness for the blinker bulb. im guessing its the same on the 2nd gen. someone feel free to correct me if youve done it on the 2nd gen

Thanks again Digon. From the first post its actually EL (Electroluminescent) wire, very flexible and very cheap ($1.40/ft for the diameter I chose. Though it does have some downsides.

Thanks for the advice drewsxb808, I was like wtf? until I got under the hood but it worked out pretty well.

I was trying to get a shot of the whole front but without the flash there wasn't enough light and there was way too much exposure so the pics came out blurry. Had to turn the flash on and this is what came out.

Flash on

The rest of the pictures are with flash off

This one is with the projectors on

You can barely make the ring out so its more of a dusk/bleek day show piece but all in all I'm pretty satisfied with my DIY. The rings are virtually invisible when off and don't affect light output one bit. If anyone is interested I'd have no problem writing up the steps.
