Default Vortex Generators

I've installed Vortex Generators on my 2008 xB. They actually work! When I reach highway speed they actually such the drag back in towards the back. On the plus side, when driving on wet pavement I don't see as much road spray on the rear windshield. On the negative side, when I get behind a vehicle that puts up a lot of road spray, I get extra spray. Living in Washington state we get a lot of wet roadways, so I am working on a custom set of splash guards to minimize what I throw up behind the car.

haha vortex generators! pix please! does it actually get rid of the dirt on the rear bumper when it's wet? or is it just the windshield? i'd be interested cus it's annoying to clean on a white car.

Thats what rear spoilers are for on our xB's.

If you look an xB spoiler(or any SUV spoiler for that matter), they take the air coming over the top of your vehicle and direct it downward behind your xB, reducing the vortex/suction that is created by our vehicles as they cut through the air. This reduces the amount of spray that is "sucked" to the back of our cars.

Default Vortex Generators

I'm not really a camera guy, but if I can find my daughter's camera I will take pictures of them while the car is still dirty so you can see the trailing edge marks on the roof.

Reminds me of the signs at parking lot exits... "Do not drive in reverse or severe tire damage will occur."

vortex generators re-energize the boundary layer of the air flowing by the contours of your car; so it delays flow-separation; which KINDA reduces drag.

However, the relatively boxy shape of the xB by itself kinda already negates this, though it might help a teeny bit by not creating turbulent flow closer to the rear-end of your car (hence all the dirt on your vehicle), but like I said, it's a boxy shape, so it will happen no matter what; the ideal shape for the rear end of anything flowing through a fluid is tear-shaped, (i.e. the 2d profile of an airplane wing).

YES. I've been looking for something like this for my first-gen xB. Where did you get them? Are they paintable? What would be the effect of putting them on different spots on the roof or body?

Never mind, found the link above ;)

As long as we're talking about aerodynamics, has anybody done an underpan or rear diffuser on an xB, specifically first-gen?
