I just ordered the TRD knockoff exhaust from Ssuperstore
I saw an xB2 the other day with the TRD exhaust as it was pulling away from the curb. The sound was noticeable, but subtle. It made me want one, but I had also just bought an alarm. I couldn't justify spending $400 on the TRD and the eBay knockoffs are nowhere to be found these days. Apparently ssuperstore.com put one on the market on October 4th for $139. It actually looks suspiciously like the eBay ones that were selling a while back. Shipping was $24 and I was charged CA sales tax - $175 total. We'll see how it goes. Pics and maybe a sound clip to follow in the next week or so. I haven't fired up my camcorder in over a year.
Here's a link to the product: http://ssuperstore.com/product_info....oducts_id/1071 |
definately put up a sound clip and pictures of that along with any noticable differences in power, cuz i really want the trd exhaust, but like you said, i cant justify spending that much loot on a bolt on muffler.
|
I'm not expecting any noticeable power gains at all. I just want a deeper tone. I probably won't post a sound or video clip if I can't capture the sound accurately. I might break out my microphones. I'm not recording any music these days so I might as well dust off the equipment and use it for something. The problem (mainly my laziness) will be taking said equipment outside to the car and stealing my fiance's laptop for a bit. Maybe I'll just try the camcorder first...
|
I'mconsidering the TRD Knock-off too because everything else is overpriced as hell (all the axlebacks are over 300....ripoff IMO). I mean, if the TRD Knock-off wasnt available, I'd probably just make my own axleback exhaust.
|
i totally agree, i was bored today and i almost broke out the jack, power tools, cherry bomb muffler and welder and had a day, but i held off cuz i might just pick up the knock off if i can find one for a good price. cuz im low on cash at the moment.

I believe they're the same. This entire eBay listing looks like the same one that was on eBay a few months ago:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts-Accessories_Car-Truck-Parts-Accessories__Scion-xB-08-09-FX1-Axle-Back-Bolt-on-Exhaust-Muffler_W0QQitemZ300264004446QQddnZPartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQadnZCarQ20Q26Q20TruckQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQddiZ2811QQadiZ2865QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item300264004446&_trkparms=72%3A543|39%3A1|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245 It's Super Store also. You will note that the eBay price is $10 less, but the shipping is $11 more to make up for it. |
Could you take measurements of the TRD Knock-off exhaust? IE: A general length of the exhaust piping (in feet), and inner/outer diameter?

I don't think it's much of a deal how this exhaust was made. If it's 304 stainless steel, it should be fine (put a magnet to it. If the magnet is attracted at all, it's probably 409 stainless steel or just mild steel). It's not a vital and moving part, it's a small part of the exhaust.
The worst part of it is probably going to be the actual muffler, which might have low quality fiberglass (and no stainless steel wool/mesh to protect it), but that can always be replaced. Either way, it's still a bargain to me. |
^only if u get the ebay chip too... then its 25hp and 10mpg more....

So I just missed the UPS guy by 20 minutes. That sucks because I'm sitting at home just playing on the interweb. I'm going to pick it up tonight at UPS if I'm not doing anything else, but I probably won't install it until tomorrow.
btw I just watched that youtube video through my good studio monitor speakers at home. Damn... I want to install this thing now! |
Yeah, another useless post... but I'm kinda excited for some reason. I'm at work and the muffler is sitting in the back of my car. My boss is gone for the day already so it looks like the stars are aligned and I can get this thing in earlier than I expected.
I took a couple pics and noticed some things. The welds for the tip are now closer to the tip than they are in the eBay picture. This makes them less visible when it's installed on the car. Secondly the overall quality looks good, but the tip is a little cheap looking. There are some imperfections (you can see some dings in the metal). Hopefully when it gets used the soot will help hide that. I think painting the inside black would help hide the imperfections. What's a good flat black spray paint that I can use to paint the inside of the tip? Can I use high-temp BBQ grill paint? Or do you think the inside will get blackened naturally over time? https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...hebeef/tip.jpg https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...ebeef/tip2.jpg |
you gonna install that 2day
|
I ended up painting the inside of the tip flat black with header paint. I think it cleans it up quite a bit.
As far as the sound is concerned, when I first started the car it was dead quiet and I wanted to bang my head against the wall... I took it for a spin and began to hear it a tiny bit at idle and while coasting. It seems pretty quiet during acceleration. I brought it back home and noticed that it smelled like a new part getting broken (burnt) in. Hopefully it will get a bit louder over time. I jacked it back up to reposition the bolts to get the tip straighter. I took it out again and it was a bit more noticeable as the car warmed up. I think it just needs a little breaking in. Sorry for the crappy pictures. My camera needs charging (as always). FromTheOld: I have your measurements but I left them in the garage (it's far). I'll post them up tomorrow. The piping is 2.25". It's installed and I'm tired and hungry. Time to start the weekend! https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...omparison1.jpg https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...comparison.jpg https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...ef/painted.jpg 10/23 added a few more shots (iPhone camera sucks man...) https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...rearangle2.jpg https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/.../rearangle.jpg https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...beef/muff2.jpg https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...ebeef/muff.jpg https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/.../sideclose.jpg https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...beef/rear1.jpg |
Alright fromtheold, here are those measurements. The measurements of the pipes are following the curves. They are fairly rough.
https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...f/744c39f0.jpg It's sounding better today after a few more miles. I think the Youtube video is a good representation. It is barely audible in the cabin. It makes noise under the same conditions that the stock muffler makes noise (like coasting and letting the RPMs drop, idling with the A/C on, startup, etc.) but it's just a little louder and deeper. It's not something you want to go with if you want to be noticed. It goes along nicely with the understated mods I've done to my car. |
Borla exhaust
I bought a borla single outlet for a little over $200 for my 08 xb. You can check it out at borla.com. I just hope it is not too loud.

It's only a little bit louder, unless you remove the scuba tank. |
Thanks for the measurements. Very good information to know. :)
|
Let us know how that Borla single turns out. I was considering that too but I like the TRD-style flattened tip. The Borla looks like a quality piece.

that trd knock off clip is one that i took of mine. as mentioned, there were slight imperfections on it. for the money, it was and is well worth it. it seemed like the tip was slightly crooked on mine, so after a few months dealing with my ocd, i hacked the tip off and put a new chrom tip on it that i painted hi-temp black. it sits a bit under the bumper now and flows better, too. if you look at the pix on page one, you'll see the resonator tip abruptly changes the flow by going from the round pipe to the flat oval interior of the tip. the sound is great (before the new tip and after) compared to the stock on and a magnaflow muffler i had before this one. again, well worth the money, imo.

Did you notice an mpg decrease with the flat tip? Did it get louder or stay the same over time? Did yours hang exactly like it does in the video? Mine sits closer to the bumper. |
yeah, it sat about 1-2 degrees clockwise, like yours does. i got some tig rod for ss from work and was going to have a friend notch it and make it level. (the notching would have made it follow the curve of the bumper instead of sticking straight out) but opted to free up the flow by putting a bolt on (internal clamp so there's no ugly ___ bolts sticking out) tip. i didn't notice any hp/mileage increases with doing this, just a bit more sound. and it will keep getting louder (not honda style, but a noticable low growl) as it "burns" in, which i am very happy with. seeing as you suffer from the same OCD, get it fixed!! you'll be so much happier, i promise. the tip i put on mimics the stock tip but a little bit more square to compliment the box. and going flat black kind of sets it apart (not an inovation by any sense of the word) but everyone has the polished tip/s sticking out. it gives it the sound you want without sticking out, you know?
|
Post some updates of the muffler getting loud over time. Since these are knock-offs, i am going to assume the internal construction is probably pure fiberglass.

Update: added a few more pics where the others are.
This thing is pretty mellow. Its tone is nice, but you have to listen close. I'm going to change the tip because frankly, this one looks cheap. I'm a little upset that the actual product is slightly different than the pictures for it. The pictures online have a better tip that's closer to the TRD. Anyway, I'll probably go with something extremely similar (Magnaflow 35175) and have a shop do the work. I'm also considering a smaller tip, like a 3" rolled square (Magnaflow 35134). Any ideas before I get this done? Should it be pointed more down, to the right, etc? I'm thinking to have it straight, level, and hugging the bumper as close as possible. |
any tip you pick is what you want. so go with your guy on that one. as far as getting it up close to the bumper, the exhaust hanger donuts are pretty flimsy and allow a lot of swing in the exhaust. before doing anything, get under the car and push the tip around and see how much swing you have to make sure you don't put a new tip on looking all sweet and every time you hit a bump you hear it smacking the bumper. just want to throw some experience atcha...
|
I got the new tip welded on yesterday. The opening is much less restrictive than the tip that came with the exhaust. Then I had to decide whether or not I wanted to paint the inside of the tip...
https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...f/DSCF0034.jpg https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...f/5b95ff20.jpg I like the painted version better so I painted it. I also raised the whole thing so it's about 1/4" away from the bumper now (not pictured). It took some work to make this exhaust look good, but it was still cheaper than the competition. I could have just waited for a used TRD to show up but I consider this project done now. Time for something else. https://i344.photobucket.com/albums/...f/a957aa52.jpg |
Nice job, the new tip looks much better than the cheap tip that came with it, and painted black was definitely the way to go!
|
Thanks CIONIDE!

Just curious, are your all's axle/cat backs still in one piece? Still nice and mellow?

FWIW, the TRD axleback is perfect but expensive. The China-clones look somewhat alike but are mostly ____. However after changing the tip and painting, they look almost as good.
