i thought about this for a long time but never got around to do it...

yes the scuba tank is a resonator and cat. precision muffler had one cut open and it clearly was a cat. its toyota's way of getting away with low emissions from the fire-breather that is the 2AZ-FE..

i think that if you do double cats it would probably make the same emissions as before but the cost of 1 OBDII cat is like $300... i was going to do a custom setup with 1 cat and 1 resonator to keep sound to a tolerable level and keep the po-pos away

oh also, this isnt exactly legal.. removing any emissions control part is kinda not street legal..

a CATalytic converter controls emissions. it reacts with the exhaust and makes it all good for the enviroment.

a silencer/muffler/resonator all describe a part that controls the exhaust sound

are there a such thing as a performance cat? if so where can i get one?
as mention on this thread our xb actually have 2 muffler, 2 cat and a resonator. one cat is connected w/the header. the scuba tank is actually a muffler and a cat combine. then there's a resonator before the axel back is this correct?

if this is correct then would it be a good idea to remove the scuba tank and replace it w/silencer and just run a stock muffler for now? would this setup help increase the airflow?
also i'm planing a going with 2.4" piping.

1. yes there is such thing as a hi perf cat. magnaflow makes a hi flow cat that is OBDII and its about 300 just for the part. ask your local muffler guys for a OBDII hi flow cat and custom piping. there is no application for the xB2 yet so its all custom for now

2. 1 cat with the header 1 resonator/cat. a muffler usually refers to assembly part of the end section of the exhaust system. so that means we have 1 muffler in the axleback.

3. yes thats going to give you some power by removing some back pressure from the resonator/cat. with that setup and the stock header youre going to be running with only one cat which is still acceptable. with you run with that setup and with a aftermarket header youre going to be kinda loud and because you dont have any emissions control, the carbon from the exhaust is going to powder coat your bumper black. also, your going to probably kill everyone that drives behind you with all the CO/NOx etc etc...

I have a catco hi-flow cat on my truck and i was thinking of going with some strup headers a Catco cat and an axel back kit, but i dont want to spend tons of money to have it not pass smog or inspections...

I'm confused, why would you cut out the stock muffler/cat/res to just to put in multiple cats? I completely removed mine and am running dual straight pipes. It sounds amazing. Deep and throaty.

For legality purposes and emssion testing... A good high flow cat with bigger piping and a performance muffler will give you both performance and a good sound too...

Oh, guess I'm lucky that I live in Illinois. I don't have to worry about legality and testing

Anyone got a dyno chart on how much gain to expect form a high flow? I dyno'd my old dodge stealth(3.0 dohc non-turbo) after switching to a high flow and got 12whp. I had just an intake for my base pull and then the high flow for the second, some guys with just the high flows report 8-9.

I doubt a 2.4 4cyl would see that much gain but I would love to see something beyond 6. I'm considering doing a cai, strup header to a high flow, a resonator, then trd the rest of the way. So I am trying to get a general idea of what to expect from all that. crossing my finger for more than 20whp. Think that's realistic? Technically where I live I could delete the cat and then I'm very certain I could do it but I hate how loud no cat is, which is why I'm leaning towards high-flow.

CarbonPhiber pulled a gain of like 18hp with intake/header/axleback(?)

i think its safe to say that without the scubatank and straight pipes we can get like 8-10hp. with a cat and a resonator i would say something like 6-8. along with the 18hp or so of the intake & header a gain of 24HP is 16%. try to get that with a s2000! eat your heart out honda boys!!

and deleting a cat is always risky.. but in FL i hope your cops arent as evil as the ones we have here in cali.. damn hippies

I think I could live with 24hp until I get the money to build up my heads. I remember reading on the tC back in the day someone did staged head upgrades for the 2az but I guess they went out of business. Supposedly there was one making nearly 200hp to the wheels n/a. Not too bad if you want to avoid f/i.

the money that it would take to get to 200 hp will not be worth it

hey i know im going to get 2 maganflow high flow cats for sure
but i was wondering if i should order the 5' long 2.5" Borla straight pipe for the shop to use for rest of mid section
or just get whatever the exhaust shop uses

is there going to be any advantage of the Borla piping over the shops generic piping beside being shinny

heres the link
