Oil Burning - Could Valvoline R&P oil help???
I know it's an oil thread, but this video
got me all excited 🤪 about the Valvoline Restore & Protect product.
I definitely want to start using it in my '09 Scion Xb - an engine known to clog up it's oil rings and burn oil like crazy.
Mine is at 80K miles and due to start burning soon... I would love it if just using this oil would save all the headaches of replacing pistons and rings etc
What do you think? Snake oil, or something worth a try?
The oil geeks video is a bit long, but is worth watching if this is something that concerns you
EDIT: After reading a few of the posts under the video, if the engine has a lot of build up, it may be a bit much to do a straight swap as it frees all the crud at once. One guy with a heavily crudded up truck engine, had to take the pan off and clean out the sludge from the oil pump suction pipe.
Definitely get a few filters and change the filter several times during initial use

I did the Valvoline oil change 1000 miles ago and noted before the change that the oil level was 1/2 way between the dots on the dip stick, after only 3,000 miles. I always fill to the top mark, so this was a little concerning to me... had the burning begun???
Yesterday I did a check of the level (at +1,000 miles) and the level was right on the full dot.
The oil looks a little darker, I will let the filter change go another 1,000 miles, there is enough oil left over to fill the filter back to the full dot (I think)
The experiment continues - I do have some B12, just in case

I've only put another 500 miles on the car, but the oil level was still at the top mark.
Looks promising.
On a side note, my sons CX5 with 95K on it was 1/2 way down the dipstick at the last 5K change. That is running on Castrol edge.
We are going to try the Restore & Protect at the 100K oil change.

2,000 mile update (hope you weren't holding your breath) Oil is still right at the top dot on the dipstick.
Oil color is yellowish, not black yet, just a little darker.
Think I'll let the filter go another 1,000 miles

Right.
After 1.25 years and 2,750 miles... I don't put a lot of miles on in retirement... It was time to drop the Valvoline R&R and see what was going on...
After all that, now I'm questioning if I check oil levels properly. I've always done them cold @ the start of the day.
I need to find a way to correlate the cold oil level with the "hot after 5 mins drain back" level.
It's always something.
