randode, i got a question for ya...why is the adapter needed? is the maf too long, so the adapter is used to space it out, or is it for some other reason? the reason i ask is that it looks like the maf would bolt right on if it was flipped backwards..im considering the same set up, but i dont have access to the tools to make the adapter. thanks!

the bolt pattern is completely different. And if you flip it, the air would hit the wrong side of the maf.

Hey Randode, thanks for the great info and pics. After seeing what you did I ordered a cheap CAI for the Tc and plan to mod it to fit my XB2 like you did. I suspect that the 2007 Tc CAI has the proper MAF mounting but I couldn't confirm it and found a really good deal on a 2005-06 TC CAI. I guess I'll have to fab a custom MAF adapter plate and mounting bracket but I like to tinker.

If you have any suggestions, such as how much you had to cut off the TC CAI pipe or the dimensions for the mounting bracket, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again for a great low-budget XB2 CAI mod.

If anyone is interested, here is a link to the Tc CAI I bought. It's nothing special but $80 for a polished 2.75" aluminum CAI with a washable filter is dirt cheap.

Edit: I received the el-cheapo CAI today and thought I better add some comments since I posted a link to it. Do not buy this unless you have a dremel tool and/or some small round files and don't mind spending some time finishing it yourself. The holes in the intake tube for the MAF and PCV were not de-burred and metal shavings could be sucked into the engine if not de-burred prior to installation. Other than that, it appears to be a decent CAI. The filter looks pretty good as do the welds and the overall finish is decent if not great.

i think it was about 2-3" off the pipe that goes down behind the headlight.
If there is an interest in the MAF adapters, I can have them made.

Thanks. I have a buddy with a machine shop who will be making a MAF adapter for me and I'll make my own mounting bracket out of some 3/4" aluminum bar stock I have laying around.

I'm a little surprised that there isn't more interest in adapting cheap knock-off Tc CAI's to the XB2 considering the cost of the options. My dealer wants $329 for the TRD CAI for my XB and they both do the same thing.

randode, what do you think you would be able to sell the maf adapter for?

I finally got my budget CAI installed and it rocks! I bought a cheapo ($80) Tc CAI and modded it 'Randode style' to fit my XB2 and I'm very pleased with myself. My machinist buddy lives pretty far from me and has been really busy lately so I made my own MAF adapter for now. It's not very pretty but very functional and my XB2 sounds great and definitely pulls harder. I'm guessing ~10hp gain from the CAI and TRD axle-back. I may put it on a dyno eventually but I'm far from finished. Thanks Randoode!

If I had it to do over again, I'd start by removing the MAF stand-offs from the Tc CAI rather than using those large washers to attach the MAF adapter but it is what it is for now and works great.

I must assume that you were replying to Randode, 'cause my knock-off copy looks very home-made, IMO. The only thing I like about my modded CAI is the polished AL mounting brackets. I used 3/4" AL bar stock from Home Depot, bent on a vise, wet-sanded with 600 wet and then hand polished.

No dyno runs yet but now that I have over 1000 miles on my box I may do that soon. I wanted to SC it but I'm still waiting on a kit that may well cost more than I'm willing to spend. I thought about modding a TC SC but the warranty and ECU mapping issues dissuaded me.

You should seriously consider marketing a comlete CAI kit for the XB2. My take is that a lot of people would buy a complete kit but only a few would buy a MAF adapter, Tc CAI and then make all the neccessary mods, custom mounting brackets, etc. I thought about it but I haven't got the time. Most people don't have the tools, patience or skillz for this sort of custom fabrication. JMO.

I second that, and I'm one of those 'most people' who don't have all the necessities to do the custom bits.

Good find on the CAI I might just get me one of these and retrofit it randode style....
