Got just over 13K on my 2008 and am noticing at idle there's a sound like a squeaky belt under the hood. Anybody else notice this?

 

When does the noise happen? Cold starts? After you have been driving? Is it a constant "sqeeeeeeeeeeeak" or more like a " squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak"?

Occurs after short mileage, yeah like a mile or two. Can't see how it would be more serious than a belt squeek, but not personally used to hearing anything much at all other than lifters and such. Standing in front of the idling engine, the sound seems somewhat broad rather than left/right or where the belt is. Any thoughts?

 

No, it's not broad. A squeak is going to be a belt only, and nothing else. Regardless of your mileage, the belt is still six years old, and actually, the fact that the belt hasn't been worked out too much might have something to do with it. But a squeak for a few moments on a new start is alright. It is an indicator that you will need to replace the belt, or a pulley, or water pump eventually. I'd take it to the dealer and have them scope it out and tell you what's wrong. They will pin point it in two seconds.

 

I would first buy a new belt, check the tension pulley, water pump for play, then take it in to the dealer if the noise is still there.

 

I put about 75k on our first belt before I changed it this year with a new Gates. Quiet as a mouse the whole time though.

 

Thanks guys! I inspected the general belt area and there is no sign of any kind of leak, pink line, low coolant level, etc. Even pan oil level is good. Belt tension seems ok to hand pressure and the squeaking only shows up during warm idle. I'll have to see if I can localize it with a stethoscope. Suppose I could also try releasing and reapplying the tensioner. Has anybody heard of tensioner problems with these 2az-FE engines?
