So I keep it in D 90% of the time and only use the sport mode for engine braking ONCE IN A WHILE....oh and the fluid is still a nice red color.

But anyways, it sometimes doesn't want to shift up or down. It just stays in gear and eventually shifts, sometimes I let off the gas pedal so that it shifts instead of staying in w/e gear it is in.

Is this a common problem???


Could it be a problem with the hydraulics inside the case, or the computer?

 

Thats the problem with the shiftronic trans that we have. The tranny is going to shift whenever it wants, regardless of what we want it to do. The main reason I use the sport shift is to, like you said, engine break or when I race to hold the gear longer than computer normally would.

There is really no way to change this unless you completely reprogram the transmission computer.

 

I agree with SiSzOuRcE...my tranny lags sometimes when I try to put the pedal to the carburetor (my grandma says that). I get that almost stall feeling with the car everytime and it sucks. I tend to drive with the sport short more often than not because of the freedom I have to control the car how I want. The only downside is my gas mileage does take a toll but not by much to wanna stick it in D rive.

 

How do the sport settings work?

Set to "2", means the auto will shift up to 2nd, then you control 3rd and 4th?

"3" means itll shift up to 3rd and hold, then you take it to 4th??

I think it automatically shifts to '3' as a precaution. Example would be: Say you are driving on the highway and decide to let the girl,wife, or fiance' drive and she decides to 'accidently' move the shifter from D to sport shift...oops! But wait! Its in third so its not gonna harm much or rev the crap outta the motor like others would propably do because theres starts in '1'. It does help a lot though in breaking and also just stretching the RPMs out when trying to be fast.

 

Well...I'm having the shift issue in drive, I just said I OCCASIONALLY use sport mode to engine brake just to show how the transmission has been used.

But yeah sport mode is a joke for acceleration because even if you tell it to shift up, it'll wait to shift up when it feels the need to.

 

Ok...now your confusing me. I KNOW you only use sport mode OCCASIONALLY...I can read. But you did not specify in your first post if you are in "D" and having the issues of shifting or if your in "sport mode" and having shifting issues. Seems like our cars are acting in a similar way as far as the trannys go.

So if you think sport mode is a "joke", either your tranny is screwed up or maybe your just not doing it right and the purpose of a sport mode shifter. Sounds like your tranny since you are having problems in both modes of driving.

 

yeah...that's the problem with this car...it's not meant to be a sports car....it just helps you when you need to stay in gear...although if you have a throttle control it should help keep the car lively...

 

Car does fine for me. Yes, the auto skips around a bit for city driving, but when I need to pass on a road or the hwy, I put the pedal down, and this little car goes. Works fine for me.

 

I have to agree with you two above me. This car rocks and its fun to drive. I just installed my header last Thursday in my car to go along with my weapon R short ram intake & my tsudo dual exhaust and I gotta tell you; if you thought ur box passed on the highway well before, my car is insanely much faster now. These motors are so suffocated from the factory its crazy. Just an FYI also, since my exhaust has opened up my mpg went from a little over 25 (like 25.5mpg) to 30-31mpg!! I love it !! (thats driving with sport shift mode most of the time also)

21?? That is really low man!

My lowest average was like 26-27 for a while, never getting below that. I was at like 29mpg until I got my new wheels and it dropped back down to 27-28.

But I tried running Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) in the tank these last few weeks and not only is my idle dead silent, but my MPG has went back up to 30mpg... And that is WITH 10% ethanol in the tank. I didn't get a chance to get it from my normal Shell!

Stuff is great... and Cheap!

Yeah, I've heard the MMO myth on many forums and haven't really gotten any kind of answer to why or how it really works.

OK, so some guys on BITOG pooled their money and had Terry Dyson (very knowledgable lubricants guy) do an analysis on MMO. What was found is that this is extremely harmful to our convertor, and to NOT use it in the fuel. It would be OK in the oil, as long as you are not burning any.

I'd say, pick another upper cylinder lube and use a good cleaner like techron in your gas.
