So I went to Capitol Raceway tonight and...

had a blast! I haven't been to a drag strip in over 10 years which is way too long. I made a total of 8 runs and 6 of them were between 14.4 and 14.5 @95-98mph. My worst run was a 14.97 when I spun the tires too much off the line. There were a lot of American muscle cars and dedicated drag cars there but I managed to line up against 3 ricey Hondas, a Saturn and a Hyundai Genesis Coupe R-spec. My best run was my last run against the Genesis coupe. Below is the time slip, I was in the right lane and the Hyundai was in the left.

Congrats, nice to hear it!

BTW, can't read the time slip, but you can probably see that for yourself.

Thanks, my friend!

Just to add some perspective, a stock MT XB runs the 1/4 in 16 secs and a stock AT XB takes 16.5 secs. I ran a best time of 14.33 @ 96.60 mph, besting a Genesis R-spec Coupe. :)

Did you enlarge the image? I added a new one so hopefully it can be read without enlarging it to full size.

Looks like your reaction time was more than 1/10th of a second slower old man.

That 1/4 mile time is on par with what I ran in 1982 driving a '68 Dodge Charger with a 383 Magnum V8, a 4-speed tranny, and Eaton locking spool rearend... man have we come a long way.

Way to go Fred -- Good Job :)!

That was my best reaction time all night! I suck... :( I was brake boosting and never quite got used to using my left foot on the brake. I need to practice that some more.

Back in High School I had the fastest car. I beat a 69 GTO Judge and a heavily modified 454 Chevy truck with my 68 Camaro SS 396 Convertible but at Beaver Springs my best 1/4 was only 14.26 @ 95mph. The Camaro was a lot faster with the oem Muncie M21 but I broke it and stupidly installed a TH400. The 14.26 run was with the TH400, stock TC, G60 rear tires and a lot of tire smoke. My 87 Mustang GT ran 14.7 @ 93 mph. The Camaro got 12mpg avg, the Stang got 20 mpg avg and my XB gets 25 mpg avg. We have come a long way. :)

I'm just a little disappointed after seeing this Motor Trend test. At least I'm quicker than the GTi.

2009 COBALT SS 2009 SPEED3 2009 WRX 2009 VW GTI

14.0 @ 102.5, 14.1 @ 100.6, 13.5 @ 101.1, 14.6 @ 94.9

Thanks! I'm sorely tempted to put my 7 psi spring back in and go back with a 1/4 tank of gas. I'm pretty sure that would get me into the 13's. Stay tuned.

..

sp2 05-23-2011 04:44 AM

what psi were u at??

ScionFred 05-23-2011 05:38 PM

6 psi

r2d2michael 05-23-2011 07:17 PM

6 psi is pretty low but then again you do have the stock auto...i wounder what the auto xb with a built tranny could do at 11-15psi lol

Mid 12's with slicks or drag radials but reliability would be out the window. Lots of broken stuff = $$$

r2d2michael 05-25-2011 02:06 PM

I hear that! I put about 8k into my Honda crx going turbo. Most of that was on replacing blown motors and tyranny’s lol i learned my lesson...

r2d2michael 06-11-2011 04:15 AM

hey fred...do you keep your foot on the gas and let the ecu shift at redline or do you take your foot off the gas to let it shift? also did you race it in Drive or sport mode?

ScionFred 06-11-2011 06:15 AM

I shallow staged, brake boosted, left on the last yellow light and kept my foot in it the entire run. I tried Drive and manual mode but in both cases I let the ECU shift. There was no difference. The only thing that made a difference was turning off TC and VSC. I shaved 1/10 second with them off.

Also, for anyone who might want to test their car in the 1/4 mile but feels out of place racing a 16 sec street car, go on a test and tune night. It's a lot of fun and no direct competition. There were a lot of cars running 16 sec and slower passes. Lots of Hondas, a Saturn wagon and a diesel truck. IIRC I was the only guy representing Toyota and Scion so get out and represent! LOL

r2d2michael 06-11-2011 06:59 AM

did you gain any boost by break boosting? i kniow when i hold the brake down i can only rev to about 3k. it would be nice to know if you do infact have boost at that rpm and what it is.

I was so fixated on the tree that I didn't even look at the gauges. However I know from experience that brake-boosting yields a much quicker launch from my car. I often see slight boost (0-1 psi) at 2500rpm such as when driving up a long steep incline. Since boosting my car never downshifts on hills whereas before it did so to the point of annoyance. It pulls them all in 4th gear now. I definitely see boost before 3000 rpm.

coolbeans. thats good to know! thank you!

ScionFred 06-11-2011 06:09 PM

You're welcome. The turbo that makes it happen is a Precision 5031E with .63 A/R turbine mated to a 'Treadstone' cast manifold with a custom made 2.5" down pipe. It spools pretty quickly.

ScionFred 10-08-2011 04:58 AM

So I went to Capitol raceway again tonight and shaved 2.2 tenths off my 1/4 mile ET. My 4 cyl, 25mpg avg XB is now officially the quickest car I've ever owned. Quicker in the 1/4 than my 68 camaro SS396, 87 Mustang GT and 90 Eclipse GTX and with much better mpg to boot! If you can't buy the car you want, build it yourself!
