My 08 owners manual says not to use seat covers because it will interfere with the side air bags.

That is correct, there are very few "covers" that work with the bags. Scion Shoppe makes ones that do also anything by katskinz or roadwire will work. I have some really nice things done with all suade,

Can a regular seat cover be modified (i.e. cut and sewn onthe side) to allow the airbag to deploy if need be.

FWIW there are some seat covers that claim to accommodate side airbags, like this one I found at exactseatcovers.com:

"Description: DESIGNS FOR ALL LOW BACK BUCKETS, WITH TWIN POST HEADRESTS. WORKS WITH SIDE AIRBAGS, ARMRESTS, LUMBAR ***** AND ELECTRIC SEAT CONTROLS." http://exactseatcovers.com/default.a...goryID=1097757

They don't have one for 2008 Scion xB2 listed (yet?), though. (The photo and description are for their "universal" model.) Clearly, your mileage may vary, especially with such a "universal" model.

Where exactly is the airbag on xB2's seat anyway? I couldn't feel anything along the side ...

I don't think that will work. As far as I know the airbag is designed to split the seam along the back of the seat. (somebody correct me if that is wrong). The seam on the xB is toward the front of the seatback which would be under that cover.

I have a Katzkin kit on my 08 and the front seats actually have the airbag tab like on the stock.

Mind stating how you got seats for your '08 xB? I checked the site under Toyota/Scion and there's no selection for '08's....

Katzkin has the 08 pattern available, it is just not on their website as of yet. You can order them through a dealer.

And YOU did the suede inserts? And you did the install?

That's a very low price, imho, even if you did the above - even better if you didn't do any of them.

No. No. And I know. Think its somewhere in the $1500 area for this to get done.

I dont know if its potentially life threatening to put in seat covers over air bags but you could get hurt regardless.

I've had my share of vehicles and the 08 seats arent standard anyway. The seats are pretty large and taller than most stock seats I've had... seat covers come in one generic "fits all" size that is pretty small. I dont think they would fit. Not to mention the arm rest.

I'm seeing the options for leather are about 1000-1500. I dont know about sheepskin but neoprene seat covers will run you about 500.

Shear comfort has a set of sheepskin and might be able to do them custom for you to work around the arm rest and air bags.
