so i threw in a component set of rear speakers to the c pillar cuz the rear speakers alone werent cutting it, and now the car sounds a hell of a lot fuller inside and out, but now when i turn it up past 45 or so they all start to crackle and sound like ____. is it because im pulling too much juice from the head unit? i just tapped into the rear speaker wires by the b pillar. im not a stereo genius, but im not retarted either...any help would be great. i was thinking about just disconnecting the rear door speakers and see if it helps, but at the same time i would like to keep them all on. before i added the rears they sounded fine all the way up to full volume. i put alpine 5.5 inch 3 ways in the rear doors and earthquake components in the c pillars. 5.5 inch.

after approx 75% of power all head units distort..
most likely you are hearing where the head unit is clipping..

Did you install a crossover in between the tweeter and the mid range speaker?
If not, thats part of the problem. If you didn't install a crossover, the tweeter is getting more bass tones then it is designed for. If you did install the crossover, you are probly hearing the clipped freq's more so now because of the added high's coming out of the tweeters you added. The Rear stage is typically used to "fill" in sounds and to compensate the front stage.

You can try just unhooking the tweets, and see if that clears up the sound a bit, or turn it up to 44 and use that as your max volume.. it's never good to send clipped freq's to your speakers unless you hate them and want them to die..

Also.... Have you checked to make sure that the polarity of both speakers are correct? Your bass tones will sound like $hit if they are backwards.. + to +, - to -.. ?
Sometimes its easy to reverse the connections and not realize it. I'de check that first on both sides to ensure that you dont have the polarity reversed.

 

yes there is a crossover, its on the backside of the wood template plate i made. it took a good 5 hours for both sides and it came out better then planned, so i wrapped it in microswede to match the ceiling. the + are with the + and - with the -. i made sure i kept them correct for that exact reason. im running the stock headunit, well the upgraded one...and you said after 75% most head units start "clipping", im not arguing this point, as i dont know too much about stereos, but before i added the rears the speakers sounded perfectly clear all the way up to full volume.

 

i made a cardboard template to match pretty closely, then i traced that to 3/4" wood, then i traced the speaker size and cut it out, glued on some microsuede and screwed it all on, the cross over is on the back so you cant see it, some people like to flash them around but id rather go with the clean look and not have my car broken into.

 

the reason it's doing that is because you lowered the ohm load on the rear channels.. which will cause the HU to overheat and in the future burn out the amp.. the rear channels are now on a 2 ohm load instead of 4 ohms.. unless you wired them in series.. which would cause an 8 ohm load and now each speakers gets 1/4th of the power that each of your front speakers get.. best bet would be to disconnect the rear speakers.. i must ask why did you add a component set to the rear? that will pull your sound stage to the rear.. you've upgraded your fronts i assume correct?

 

well most of the reason i added the component set to the rear is cuz i had them laying around, and i wanted more sound in the back, since it sucks back there. i havent upgraded the front speakers yet, but what im going to do after reading your ohm information about burning out my headunit is take the pioneers out of the rear doors and put them in the front. the sound stage isnt completely from the rear, but it is more noticeable and the car is louder overall inside and thats basically what i was going for. plus i wanted to use those stupid little cubby spaces for something instead of those storage things that scion sells, what would you possibly put in those? thanks for the information, once i swap out the fronts from the rear doors ill let you know how it sounds, thanks again!

 

if you put that component set in the front doors you'll be amazed at the difference.. reason why.. your ears.. you have better highs coming from behind you than in front of you right now with that component set.

if you are in a conversation with someone, do you stand back to back and talk or do you stand face to face. if you're standing back to back you don't hear them as clearly because your ears are naturally made to hear sounds in front of you better.. in a concert.. do they put all the speakers behind you? no they have a ton of speakers in front of you

upgrading front speakers is the most important speaker to upgrade.. tons of sq cars in competition do not even run rear speakers.. if they do they are usually turned down through gain on the amp or they are ran off the headunit.. or they just use a midbass in the rear.. like taking the tweeter out of the component set

 

yes, i completely agree...i disconnected the rear door speakers and undid the tweeters, so now i just have the mids from the rear. it sounds better, and i did upgrade the fronts, but today i decided to rip the car apart and run speaker wires and rca's so im gonna be connnecting an amp to the speakers and another amp for a sub under the passengers seat, i custom made a box like other people on the site...i hope it sounds good. ill have about 1000 watts total in the car...not a show stopper, but better than stock. thanks for all your help everyone
