center speaker
Center front helps with home theater movie playback, but otherwise it's doubtful. For accurate audio, the less circuitry the better, and so I'm a proponent for straight stereo. I suggest pursuing excellent performance from your stereo circuitry, and not complicating it with other parameters. Center may provide a more stable center, but does it provide better sound? Not in my experience.
My 2 cents. If your looking for better sound imaging in your car. A component speaker system is best. Or add a set of front tweeters + preferably you would try to have your tweeters close to ear level or maybe installed in the front pillars or front dash corners pointing towards you. Also, adding an inexpensive mod such as a Clarion EQS746 7 band equalizer ($45-$60) or other brand, which you could hide in your glove box would also help + dramatically tweak your sound.
What type of aftermarket stereo system are you running in your car?
Your car stereo head unit is not manufactured for 5.1 home theater surround sound. The main purpose of the center channel is for dialogue from a movie. The other 5.1 speakers will give all the other discrete sounds from the movie.
