guys I know about google -- for the sake of forums let's assume I've done some googling, the proper search terms though? that actually does help, so I'm getting some collateral knowledge out of this anyway!
you don't have to post if my questions have offended your level of knowledge

Finding all of this stuff is pretty easy. Toyota hasn't changed it's stereo wiring harness for quite a while, if ever. It's all the same plugs. You could plug an OEM xB2 headunit into a 2003 Pontiac Vibe and it should work.
The kit for the headunit to fit is easy to find as well.
I do believe that I have found both of these for my car on sonicelectronix or even eBay.

That it is. Physically, the double DIN unit will fit with the OEM brackets bolted to the side of the new unit. However, there will be about a half inch gap on the left and right side. The 'fit kit' will fill those gaps. If you were plastic body work savvy, you could mold everything in and make it seamless and sexy.

That's a good head unit. I would've purchased from Crutchfield though, they have great support and include dash kits and wiring harness adapters for free along with step-by-step DIY instructions.

As stated before, you will need both a harness and dash kit but no antenna adapter. Personally, I am an installer and would use the Metra kit over the scosche kit but either should do fine. I just feel the fit and finish of Metra's product is better. That radio is definitely a good one, but it doesn't have Bluetooth. If you wanna add Bluetooth streaming and hands free, check out the 3500.

So say I had dude install everything, including this non-BT head unit. Then let's say a year from now I want to upgrade to the bluetooth and a bigger screen. Is that going to be basically plug and play at that point, no additional tuning or installation?

Nope. I haven't looked up the schematic on our cars, but the typical Toyota only requires 4 wires. A ground, ignition, sic wire, and a reference ground or grounded factory wire. If you get the ASWC or ASWC-1 they auto learn the vehicle so the is no programming. If you go to http://www.axxessinterface.com/steer...ntrol_new.aspx you can pull up the directions. There are even pictures to go with the step by step instructions.
