Newer Scion xB owner with key fob question....
Hi,
Ive got a situation and my local dealership is no help.
I have a 2008 Scion xB.
My key/remote, (Im pretty sure from scouring the internet),
does NOT have a "chip".
The dealership wants $149.00 for this remote,
and then ANOTHER $100.00 to set the code to the old one,
so it will open my doors/hatch.
My thought process, is to purchase a key blank/remote,
from a seller on ebay for under $20.00,
and take my old key to a professional locksmith,
to have them cut it.
But that still leaves the problem of the coding it,
so it works with my vehicle.
It looks as though the Key ID numbers,
have rubbed off the back of the remote and I bought this car used.
Is it possible when I buy this new remote,
to program it myself?
I still have the old remote.
Is there anyway to find that Key ID,
on any other part of my car?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Roger

Your key fob looks exactly like the Tc key, open the fob and look inside to see if you have this
If you do,that's the chip. With a tiny flat head screwdriver poke around the edges until you get some some of the epoxy out and try to pry it out but be careful not to break it.Now get your new blank key fob and transplant the transponder and put the chip in the same location on the new fob,you should be good to go..........hope that helps.

Thanks so much for the picture/post Leon.
I looked at my Fob and it does not have the "chip" you refer to.
I contacted the company on ebay that sells the blanks and they said any professional locksmith should be able to cut the key and have a coding machine for the "opener" part.
So in the elimination process I was thinking of an idea to make sure I am positive this doesn't have a chip.
If I leave the key Fob in my house, and go out to my car and Im able to start it without that Fob nearby, then that should answer the question, that my key is NOT chipped, correct?

This is one of my issues.
I bought the car used and the Key ID is nowhere to be found.
I dont have the original Ket tag and don't know if there's anyplace else to find that Key ID number.
All I have is my VIN number.

Alternately you can order the Techstream cable and software, Mini VCI 16 Pin OBD2 Diagnostic Cable for Toyota Tis Techstream Cable CD US SHIP | eBay , and you can code any key into your car, remove old ones, and change some other programming features like having all the doors unlock with one push of the button.
