2nd-Gen xB Road Noise
Hi,
I have a '06 RS 3.0 that I bought new and have put on about 16K miles. I put on 17" forged Centerlines, TRD springs, strut tower brace and rear sway bar and love the way the car handles and drives like a gocart.
That said, the thing about the car that is making me consider dumping it is the noise inside the cabin that is transfered from the road, engine and wind.
My brother bought a '06 also and did the same mods and is tired of all the noise too. He even went back to 15" wheels, but that didn't help much.
My question is:
For those of you with experience with the 1st gen and 2nd gen xBs, is the 2nd gen noticably quieter?
Thanks for your input,
Steve

Truthfully, no. There is road noise, which is understandable, because it's an economy vehicle. If this were a Lexus LS460 and had this noise, I'd be severely disappointed.
You can do some basic sound deadening. I'm planning on doing at least a full layer of SecondSkin's DamplifierPro on my whole car, single layer on the floor, followed by their Spectrum spray, and ultimately (on the floor and wheel wells) some of their Luxury Liner Pro.
I'm sure you can go with lesser expensive product, like Elemental Designs' line up, and you should be fine!

Just get a few cans of the 3m under coating rubber sound deadner. I put 3 cans in the rear of my xb under the spare tire and the other plastic pieces. I put 2 cans under the rear half from the gas tank back.
Wayy more quieter than before. Next I wan to pull up the front carpet, seats and spray there too.

got the fatmat rattletrap done yesterday and it made a big difference. i installed it to the whole trunk area including the hatch and the floor of the rear seats. only did 1 layer though maybe gonna do another layer later but gotta get the doors and front done first.
when i install the deadner i've notice theres 2 openings in the rear lower 1/4 panel. its seems like its for air flow but not too sure how that works. i wanna know if it's ok to cover up those 2 openings " 1 on each sides "?

Its like spray paint, you would need to blast it off. Its like 7 bucks a can from advance auto near the bed liner and spray paints. Its a gold can with black top.

When I had my XB1 I did the following and it made huge difference in the road noise:
Sound dampening sheets on the roof
Undercoating (the XB1 has no undercoating from the factory)
Packed fiberglass insulation into the rear hatch
Sound dampening sheets in the doors
Sound dampening sheets on the floor particularly in the rear
I noticed the biggest differences when I did the roof and the undercoating.
Another big reason these are so loud is because all the interior parts are just cheap plastic. They don't absorb much sound energy like other models constructed with more plush materials.

My answer to your question would be yes, definitely, especially at freeway speeds.
