OOH yeaH....GOT A BIG ONE....Took the box on vacation to Colorado....just inside New Mexico, a small rock flew up and POW....started as about a 4 inch crack, now it's about 9 inches long in a C shape. Looks friggin great. Called glass shops, but no one has 08 windshields yet. I may have to take to a dealer and unload my wallet. Damn insurance deductible's too much to cover it.
I wonder if the 08 glass is as bad as the older ones. This was a tiny little rock, it appears....the actual pit is the size of a pencil tip....but the crack is phenomonal.
And....I only had the car 3 weeks. Should have taken the other car on this trip, as I also have several paint chips to match.

I got a crack in the corner of my windsheild. I've had the car for about a month. the crack starts at the bottom edge of the glass about 6 inches from the drivers side a-pillar, goes up about 4 inches, then over towards the a-pillar about 4 more inches. Whats weird (and probably irrelevant) is that if i turn on the wiper, the bottom of the blade perfectly traces the crack, but it could be coincidence. I noticed a tiny TINY little chip at the very base of the glass that i suspect caused the crack, but im not sure. I drove the car on monday, it poured rain non stop all day, HARD. i didnt notice any crack too or from work but the rain hitting the windshield constantly along with the dark dreary weather and the wipers moving may have made it less notiecable. tuesday morning i came out and discovered the crack for the first time. i just hope it small enough to be repaired and not need replaced.

I got two chips in a matter of a week. Two rocks hit the windshield but the cracks/chips aren't spreading, yet. Luckily my insurance has me covered with no deductible.

I went to Bob Bridge Toyota (where I bought my XB) today for my oil change. I showed them the crack and said I wanted to come back at a later time to talk about it being covered under warrantee.

While I was in the waiting room waiting for them to finish the oil change, one of they guys came in and said they looked at the crack and will cover under warrantee!!

They had me sighn the form and said they'll call me when the glass gets in.

Folks, there are two completely separate issues going on in this thread.

Issue number one: An inordinate number of rock chips.

Issue number two: Stress cracks showing up without any apparent cause.

The first issue is typical for cars with more verticle windshields. A lot of people do not know this, but some cars windshields are raked back so far that they will deflect a nine MM bullet. The angle matters. An xb will get more cracks than most modern cars, for the same reason Jeeps have this problem.

The stress cracks, however, are a completely different matter! This implies a DEFECT of some sort, either design or manufacturing.

Some insurance companies offer an optional windshield rider, that can cover 100% of the replacement cost, but it is usually an additional premium added to your policy. It's usually not that expensive (check with your own company for rates and availability) and could be a really good idea for owners of cars that attract rocks, such as our own xB's.

On a related note, most insurance companies do not raise your rates for comprehensive claims. While you are usually obligated to pay the deductible, your annual rate shouldn't go up. This means the windshield replacement isn't usually "free", but there is no rate penalty either. Some states even require free replacement for any windshield damage due to safety reasons (just not the Socialist State of California).

Damn that's really good to know. Too many posts on cracked windshields, I'm def going to add windshield coverage if it isn't already covered. Thx cionide

No problem unity303, but keep in mind that not all insurance companies offer the windshield rider. I'm with State Farm, who doesn't offer it, so I dropped my comprehensive deductible to $100. It only costs a little more each year than my old $500 deductible. If I only need one windshield replaced in something like the next 6 or 7 years, I'm still ahead of the game financially. Additionally, most companies don't raise your rates for a comprehensive claim.

Too bad we don't have state required free windshield replacement like some of the other states.

My state has free windshield replacement, did it on my mom's 05 xB late last year. Call into Allstate and they sent folks out to her and took care of it.
I'm with Progressive and they even have a separate claim process for windshield cracks.

My state's rates are also very high and companies drop you for no reason at any given time. Pros and cons bud!

Just a belated follow up. They did replace it free! 8k later, no problem yet.

There are two completely different and separate issues going on here. Issue number one: The window seems to be a road hazard magnet and people are getting more rock chips than they expected. Issue number two: stress cracks are showing up out of nowhere. They seem to happen without anything striking the windshield.

The former is caused by the simple fact that the windshield is so relatively verticle and offers a large verticle surface area as a target for road hazards. That is a problem with any vehicle with a relatively verticle windshield - just ask any Jeep owner or any windshield replacement company what windows they find themselves replacing the most.

The latter is a design defect caused by either glass that cannot handle the stresses of driving even without being struck by road hazards (too thin), or the glass is being overly relied upon to support the frames rigidity, again relative to the glass' thickness. Or there are just plain stress points where the glass comes into contact with the frame.

The latter is the most annoying for obvious reasons. I really hate design defects.

The fact that the factory GLADLY replaced mine for free spoke volumes to me.

coryjames/chewy, that just sucks! another one bites the dust...

i dropped off my car tonight to get my windshield replaced. dealership quoted me $500 but I was able to go with Dee's Windshield Repair in SoCal to replace it for $350 out the door no tax... that was a much more reasonable price. Curious if anyone else has seen them cheaper though.
