Default Covered by warranty?

I'm nearing 15k miles right now and did my second oil change on the xB. Did the first one at around 1.5k miles and used the dealer for the next two. Upon doing my oil change, I noticed that the plastic shroud that covers the oil filter was broken, meaning, someone (most likely the dealer) tore it apart to have access to the oil filter. Now, I don't see how wear and tear could break it so is it covered by the warranty? If not, how much would it cost to replace it?

I'd go back to the dealer that did the last and mention it, but I doubt they will claim it after so long. Doubt itll be warranty too.

I doubt they'll cover it.

Thanks for the advice.

Yeah seriously, who would look under their car after an oil change from the dealer?

DIY oil changes/maintenance > dealer. I've had enough previous bad experiences to avoid dealers at all costs.

warranty doesn't cover stupid mistakes made by stupid people.. even if it's the dealership's moronic fault..

though.. you could still complain and they might take care of it.

dealership or local shop, you should always check the work(deepstick, filters, etc) before leaving and ask for the old parts if the work required replacing part/s.

True that after any oil change you should check your fluid levels, but no one ever thinks to ensure that they didn't break anything. That's always my fear.

Oh well. If you make a big enough scene they'll cover it for you. You can park your car towards the entrance of the dealership and be a distraction to their business. Get a costume of a screw or drill bit and hold up a sign that says, "Guess how I got screwed by [Dealership Name] Toyota/Scion?". It'd be cool if you had a couple people there dancing to Thriller on endless loop.

Come to think of it, even though it's a fallacy, will they say "I" broke it since I looked under the car, in which the typical person won't look at? Since "I" looked at it, it means I touched it, thus breaking it?

i work at a toyota dealership.

Your best bet is to take the car in with the receipts from your previous 2 oil changes.

Every dealership has what they call a "shop ticket". This is basically for anything that they mess up or need for a vehicle that they dont want to charge a customer for.

Go in and talk to the service manager. DO NOT get angry with him about it. If you raise your voice, there goes your chance to get anything done with your car.

Just my $.02

Question, would they ask me why I would look under my car and how I can tell it's broken? My car just hit 15k and I replaced the oil myself already. Would they raise questions about it?

The receipt shouldn't be a problem. I bought my car there and had the first two service done at their location.

you should have shown it to the dealer right after you changed your oil.

Just got 245,000 miles before trading in my Toyota van,I do my own oil, brakes, belts, plugs, etc.

I don't trust anyone else to touch my Scions.

Paid the dealer $800 to replace the timing belt on a Mitsubishi car,all they wanted to do was force me to purchase a new car, after I forced them to fix it the mechanic sabotaged the engine by over tightening the belt to the water pump.
