Did I make a mistake?
I will tell you man, you will LOVE your xB.
The engine is more powerful then most realize. You can make this thing GO. I love to floor it getting up to speed on highways just to feel the power. This engine is really refined and optimized for the power it has so don't worry about its power!
Secondly, the xB is a really fun car to have period. I don't think you will regret it at all honestly. If mileage was your concern, just think of what you will save. I mean, I average 29 MPG between mixed and highway driving. If you do most highway, expect 30-33MPG easily.
You will save on insurance, gas, and have just as much fun in it man. Triple win deal here.
Keep us updated!

What I don't understand is didn't you test drive the xb2??? Did you just go there and just buy it? I test drove the xb2 5 times before I bought it and I went to 5 different dealers!
I don't understand why you are doubting yourself now. Buying a car shouldn't be just a spur of the moment thing. And you are comparing two completely different cars. I seriously question your purchase and why you traded in your car if you have this much doubt.

U wanted better mpg, cheaper payments and insurance you got all 3 in the xb2.
Now you have ALOT more room than before. I dont know if u a family or kids but if you do this is the best vehicle to get.
I know how you feel I own a 1972 chevy nova ss w/ a 427 and a chevy camaro i sold my camaro and bought my xb2. I'am so glad I did i love my xb. my scion is my first brand new car and first import.
right now ur still wondering about if it was a good decision but once you start saving the money on gas, insurance, and monthly car payments you'll be much happier and wont regret it. especially when gas starts to get up in the $5 & 6 dollar range cuz its only a matter of time

I sold my 400hp wrx for the xb2 and I dont regret it a bit. I needed a change for all of the reasons you gave. I never really drove the wrx anyway. it was my baby, I built it and raced it hard. I will miss going fast and being able to kill 80% of what ever drives by, but there is no place for that anymore other then the racetrack. I wanted to get into something I could drive and enjoy. If you are NASIOC look me up (same screen name) Im sure you will find a post with my car in it.
Im just starting to get all the parts to mod my xb, I cant wait.

im selling an 02 WRx to get an xB2 or an xD. Cant decide yet. Both cars ahve quicker turn in than the 02 WRX and i would imagine even better with summer tires, lowered and sway bars. One thing you will like is saving money on maint down the road. The flat four is a b*tch to work on. Spark plug change - you have to loosen engine mounts and disassemble much of the engine bay. $20 parts $600 labor. Seriously in Texas the cheapest tune up was around $600. Plus once you do major work like that is creates a lot of other issues that are prob related. At least they were with me. PLus the xB will hold its value better.
BUT you can get better mileage from the WRX. I just got 26mpg on the last 400 miles with drastic change in driving. Nothing unsafe but i drive it a grandma. Premium sucks too. Also the xB has better safety which is another reason i will get one as a family car

Man don't waste your money on a turbo on this car and lose the reason you most likely bought it for...MPG gain. But yea like someone else said, if you really wanted better MPG....shoulda stuck gotten the xD and just get your thrills of your bike.
i feel you on this man.
I just went from an 07 Tacoma X-runner to an xB2 and it hurt at first. I used to put $90 a week in the tank of the Xrunner and now i put $50. My insurance went down $20/mo and im saving $100/mo on the car payment.
I miss the truck, but it was almost complete as far as mods go and it was time for a new project.
the truck did 0-60 in 5.3sec with full bolt ons. Dyno'd at just under 250rwhp and 290rwtq. But it got 17MPG full freeway driving and 13mpg driving in the city. My xB is averaging 23.5mpg and im driving like a mad man.
the "downgrade" hurt but will be changed soon with the TRD s/c.

The WRX is definitely an awesome car. However, you need to look at the safety features and standard equipment you get on the xB2. I don't think there is a better value for the dollar anywhere, from any manufacturer. Plus, you get Toyota reliability and unique styling too.
I love my xB2, it is overall the best car I've ever had. My one and only gripe is that the gas mileage isn't great. It does have decent power and is pretty quick (not compared to a WRX, I understand), so I guess that is the price we pay for that.
I think the xB2 will grow on you as time goes by. I know I always look forward to driving mine.

I've bought cars and regretted it afterwards.
I owned (note past tense) a '02 WRX (first blaze yellow in Wisc, 4/01) that I autox'd.
I own an '08 XB and an '03 Mini (traded the WRX for).
I get better mileage with the XB (31mpg) than the Mini (28mpg).
The XB is completely different than the WRX. If you expect it to be a WRX, you will regret the purchase. Hurley Haywood is credited with saying, in reference to Porsches, "You can make a pig into a race horse, but you can make an awfully fast pig." The XB has great "bones." It's a 300k motor. It's easy to work on. Hotchkis has springs and bars. Getting the XB is never going to be a bad decision. It's just never going to be a WRX, but then the WRX will never be an XB.
I really love my XB.

here's my 2 pennies
you'll love how smoothly the engine accelerates. very good acceleration for a N/A car.
high-speed cornering leaves something to be desired, on the interstate i took a moderate corner at 102 and could feel the sidewalls rolling in on them selves, this is an easy fix, new wheels and lo-pro tires
thats the basic from me. don't try any highspeed corners on the stock steelies and rubber... other than that, it gets great mpg for the power it gives.

TX WRX; I tried the drive like a grandma thing. Never went over 3400RPMs (no turbo at all) and I eeked out 19MPG.
Shinobi; I'm starting to get into the unique styling. I was just used to the aggressive fender flares, mean hood scoop, and huge jerk when the turbo kicked in.
redline8k; I'm registered at NASIOC but I hardly ever log on. Some good people but just too many flaming douchebags to deal with. I'm on a local forum that's not associated with NASIOC.
Sonicaftermath; WTH were you thinking?!? My rex handles great but I wouldn't do that! You're not driving an Indy car!
I think some of the reason I was so bummed is that the local (only) Subaru dealer is really starting to support the Subaru fans. They're expanding their service department, adding an AWD dyno, and the lead tuner does a great job, so I've read/heard. But again, got to pay to play and I'm not really in a position to do that right now. The sube community is really tight here also, with autox's, track days, work days, meets, etc., but I also work all the time so I don't really get to go to anything anyway.
I'm getting into the box. It's even got a nickname from a coworker and I haven't even picked it up yet.....the toaster.
There's nothing like a boxer four with a huge snail, FMIC, and a turbo back, but slower is ok. I'll just put in a nice sound system, tint my windows dark and cruise. I pick it up tomorrow morning. It got here early.
But...I'll probably go with gold wheels, red calipers, and hella horns peeking out of the grill for a little sube flavor.

I feel the pain that you have-and frequently I think about trading for a WRX or an EVO especially now since the 1st gen xbs are trading in high cuz of gas prices and there are a lot of those others turning up-(especially with the body changes they have both had)
Now-what I am realizing is that I love my xB.I miss the power and the performance to some degree but I have already done tires, wheels, suspension and brakes so everything is there except the go pedal-but I also get over 30 MPG no matter how and where I drive.
I am realizing it has to do with the feeling/attitude that goes with the xB (even the 2nd gen)-if you keep it for what it is there is nothing as cool or that gives you that "I love to drive MY car" feeling. So that is what I am going to keep on doing.
Enjoy your box-power later for it maybe-but it is still cool.

Compromise = civic si coupe (2.0L engine with 197 hp) gets 21/29 mpg, weighing in at 2886#.
At 6.7s 0-60, the si coupe is a lot closer than the xB2 at 8.5s, and gets about the same gas mileage average as the xB2.

I looked at the civic si before I bought my rex. My head is on the headliner, it takes 91 octane, and you have to drive it like you're mad at it to get the VTEC to kick in.
Good input though. But I've already signed on the box.

yah...that's what you get when you eek out 197 hp from a 2.0L engine...high revs to reach the power band.
