Epidemic Water Pump Problem!
I figured as much. The only real difference I could think of though, would be in how to access the water pump. The TC's engine bay seems considerably shorter than our xB2's. Just at a glance it looks like the water pump is directly across from a piece of the frame. I just wanna know from someone who's done it on an xB2 if I need to remove a motor mount and drop/raise the block to gain access. I'm sure I could figure this out on my own but I'd like to save myself the time and trouble of such. Either way, thanks for the advice!
On another note...
Since my car is at 87K its not under warranty so I will, of course, be replacing the water pump myself. My main question is what's the best water pump to buy? Is the Duralast from AutoZone ok? How about the Beck/Arnley? Or should I just go with the upgraded OEM part# 16100-0H050?
Pricing doesn't vary a whole lot between the different brands so that's not a big issue.
I just want to replace it with a quality pump and not have to worry about this again at any point in the future. I will also be sure to use the Toyota long life coolant (red stuff) and be sure to add ample RTV sealant when installing the new pump. Any help is appreciated!

Well upon further inspection, my water pump is still leaking, I've got the pink spray line on the hood liner and I have to refill coolant every 3 months. However, it is NOT the pump that is making the horrible noise. Turns out its that idle pulley sitting at the very back of the engine block. I can physically see it wobble while the engine runs and it syncs up perfectly with the grinding noise. So, I guess now I have to replace that ($50) and I might as well do the water pump too while I'm in there. It may not need replacing right now but I'd rather get it done with.
Anyone else had to replace their idle pulley?

Well I got the infamous "spray" mark on the lining of the hood
and to further verify, my coolant is now low
Rockland are you 100% that the Beck Arnley is made in the same place as the OEM upgrade replacment? Also is RTV sealant required for this pump or not? THANKS!
UPDATE : The guy above is WRONG. The Beck/Arnley pump is NOT the same for the 2nd gen XB - I have verified this today. I thought it was kinda funny how a dealer was recommending an aftermarket pump... hmmm.

Don't know for sure if this is an effective preventative, but I'm running Prestone Cooling System/Antifreeze Treatment in my coolant with the hope of its seal protection additive avoiding the pink-line-of-water-pump-death problem. Got the idea from ScionFred and since I'm all for problem prevention, I jumped in.
Don't think it could hurt and is inexpensive.
It's strange because in 50k miles I've only had pink splatter twice so far. I have cleaned it up and keep an eye on it. I almost thought it was from the overflow vent til I came across others having problems.

Yeah, it's been around awhile, Camry and RAV4 2AZ-FE as well (definitely higher failure rate than normal), but not always and only after a few tens of thousand miles have elapsed. Can't tell whether prevention is working for me, still low miles and even otherwise, could just be luck, but anything that logically moves the odds in my favor is welcome

While driving from Des Moines to Denver in Jan. 2013, my 2009 Scion XD starting shaking an making noise. Felt as it I had a flat tire but did not. Got a recall notice on this a few months later. Took it in to Des Moines dealer. When done with replacement parts, service person told me I needed a new water pump. They opened hood, showed me a little spray on my interior hood, said it was leaking fluids and making noise indicating it needed new water pump. I told them it was not making the noise when I brought it in. I then received a voicemail from the service person saying I had my car in for service in Oct. 2011 & then told me at that time that I had leakage problems. I have my invoice/receipt. It says nothing about fluid leakage. It would have been under warranty & I would have had it repaired. When I told the service person this, he denied saying it even though I have it on voicemail. I asked if it is normal for the water pumps to go out & how many miles should I get out of a pump. He would not answer this. I am thinking this has been a problem with the Scions that should have had a recall. Please help me with this. Service person said the normal charge for replacement is $1,000.00.
If u see a spray mark on the inside of hood then tell tale sign water pump is failing/failed. Mine went on my 2008 Scion xB at 52.5K miles. Was under the mileage but not the years (60,000 or 5 yrs-whichever comes first for powertrain warranty). $500 repair job but fortunately with Geico as my insurer got half back under their Mechanical Breakdown Insurance program..$250 deductible for any claim so I cant complain to get back half when I was expecting nothing. Have to say I'm disappointed as I've never had a water pump fail on any vehicle I've owned, used or otherwise. Having purchased this vehicle brand new and being OCD'ish about maintenance.. it was a surprise to me.
You may find that the pump leaks when you get the engine temperature up to the fan turn on temperature 204 degrees F which by then the cooling system starts to build up some pressure and only then will it develop a little leak. My 2006 xB used to have that pink line and since then I have kept up filling it with the factory coolent in the expansion bottle so as to not run it low. Have not had to replace my pump yet and have not seen any pink lines going on 7.5 years and 55K miles.
Thanks for the input, perhaps that's an alternative solution, just don't allow the coolant level to drop. Perhaps another solution is to change the thermostat temp so coolant flows sooner. In my case, I'm hoping a coolant additive solves the problem. Best luck to each and all
