inadaquate airflow, weird smell, front intake 08 XB, MOD FIX
How about getting the hot air out of the engine bay?
These worked pretty well for '49 Buicks.

It's a straight shot right over the wheel housing.
Stick some LEDs in there and have them glow red at night! 8D

Like the LED idea Hypnotic! That would be sweet!
Like the holes ZIO. I also want to see the covers. I to have the hot radiator fluid/plastic smell after driving. Probably 50% of the time. Even in the dead of winter I had it. Blamed it on new car smell, but I have gone 3500 miles now.

HypnoticTealMica, nice find.
I might use those fender vents too, but I think I will still louver the hood because heat rises.
I may not grill the holes until after I louver the hood, because I want air to go in not get deflected, most of the grill material I have seen blocks a good portion of the air.
Simple thin vanes would be good maybe I'll find something online that I could cut up and make it work, aluminum would be sweet but expensive.
I posted the diagrams and some more pics.

look on ebay- $80 for plastic bumper skin, lol not $18K- People like you don't understand much more than looks. Thanks for burning my thread.
This mod is just holes for now- i'll grill it next week fashion designer.
Idiocracy, see this movie if you haven't already...

I never said your mod cost $18,000 to fix, I said you F'ed up a brand new car by cutting holes in it. Something you said plan to keep doing by cutting even more into the hood and fenders.
... and you have no idea what I understand other than I don't understand why someone would do to their brand new car what you are doing to yours - and it'll still look stupid grilled.

heh- Gonna flame me on looks huh? Lets chat.
I'm a lyrical genuis and you neva shoulda stepped, now you gonna pay for your fool's folley pest. I wrote a song about your kind called:
"It's all about the looks"
You got yurself thinkin your new CAR would take you far,
rolling tight bling as you ride by the mall.
Hot summer sun, many years gone by, all the ladies STILL think that you're the fly guy.
When all of the sudden-
cough cough, sputta sputta, now your car is in the gutta,
guess you shoulda listened that smart motha-cussa.
A few years back-
Had some science tell you straight- but all you had for that was some well-placed hate.
Now you riding ALL ABOARD!, and your cars in the shop, sure glad it's got a ward.
But you can't read or you dont undastand, that this cars' ward was designed to lead you by the hand, right to edge where your only way out is to answer the man with your plastic cards' clout.
No loner car for you- you're in a S--t stew. Better call your dad and your momma too.
It's all about the looks! yo! yo! yo!
It's all about the looks! yo! yo! yo!
You shoulda hit the books, yo! yo! yo!
You say it's all about the looks, Yo! Yo! Yo!
But the ladies don't mind as your phone rings all the time,
giving nothing but excuses and waistin' all THEIR time.
Saying your ride looks great , all jacked up in the air, with the motor F'd up and the TRANNY not there.
Thought you didn't need the money, cuz your ward was FAT, too bad it don't cova the WEIRD stuff undaneath your cars' metal hat.
Now you're all broke- and feeling kinda strange, as you poke all around, looking for some change- so you can make a call, as your dealer says; you can Use MY phone, but he won't give you anotha ride to your far-away home.
Sayin to yurself "it's alright, I can bum a ride" as you walk on by the ladies, that you have left behind.
Guess you shoulda listened to the man with the plan, instead of filling this thread with your no-good spam.
Yo! Yo! yo! it's all about the looks! yo! yo! yo!

got a new whip
from Japan just off the ship
engineered by Toyota's best
it just not good enough, I'll be a pest
post crap on scion life
even though it's a bunch of tripe
now I must get along
my drill and saw will sing a song
my xB is running hot as coals
so I must fill it with holes

I'll tell you straight-"To make more money than the rest."
Life is the real test, Boy-
If ya got no greenbacks then you make no dollas,
and you just get fired like all the rest of the fodda.
You say I got tripe, but you're just ripe- with jelousy of my lyrical gripe.
I know I'm right, yo.

hey mike-
LOL a little music makes your day better!
My gas mileage has not changed at least it still says the same numbers on the average readout display, and more cooling air does make a car last longer. I trimmed off two very small pieces of foam less than a 3" triangle each which did almost nothing for changing "crumple" resistance. The original foam design was almost exactly what it looks like now anyhow. The bumper would only deform in crashes exceeding 5mph, the layer of crash foam behind the bumper skin between the metal bumper and the skin is unaffected by this mod.
If a proper vent had been installed where it was needed then this mod would not be needed. By proper I mean one that would add to the strength of the bumper not take away from it, vaned aluminum inserts would be nice.
I noticed that the fresh air cross section of new cars has been getting smaller, and there are cars that fail long before 100K miles and the sensors do before that. This can be attributed to higher operating temps under the hood caused by less cooling air moving through the engine compartment.
Computer-based automation systems like to stay cool, the cooler the better, period.

You thread flamers sure are funny.
In the race to have the coolest XB on the road.

The smells are gone, and that is good, it used to be noticable and I worried about my XB, now there is no strange hot rubber smell and I KNOW the engine interior stays cooler. At 55mph my bumper vents put an average of aprox. 1,000,000 cubic centimeters of additional cooling air through the holes every second. (That's 1 million Cm3/sec or 38 Ft3/sec ) each bumper vent has a forward edge profile of 28cm x 8cm times the flow of air per second at 55Mph. So this is a very effective place to put a couple of vents to bring engine compartment temperatures down.
BTW- I built turbo-charged, custom control system import race cars (Honda, Nissan) for fun and profit with my friends for many years, I know what "burnt" smells like and this wasn't it, as for all you other people's negative comments about me or this thread- lol.
Zio
That is real data, you just obviously can't do advanced math or understand how i got those numbers, if you want the "exact" numbers then I can post them. when I say 1 million Cm3, it's a round down from 1,101,005.8752 Cm3/sec, if you could do math at this level you would have easily figured this out, from an given hole size that is exposed to air moving at 55mph that measures the total size of the forward facing profile of "both" vent holes in my bumper. the 38 Ft3/sec is a round down from 38.88 so a conversion was used from Cm3 to Ft3, when I wrote "each" vent so take the total area of the one vent measurement given and times it by two... lol I feel like I'm teaching class.
Zio
Wow...you try to talk down to your co-workers like that? Believe it or not Zio, most of us on here aren't the knuckle dragging gear head types that you would sooner spit on than have a conversation with. Consider your audience carefully before looking down your nose.
And your "Improvement" is still based on assumptions. Somehow I doubt you took the time to take real measurements and chose to work in the theoretical world. Yes, I'm sure it looks good on paper, but that dosen't make it real. You should still ferret around under your hood to see just what was cooking. If something was indeed 'hot' then you may want to replace it.
My numbers are real.
Sometimes you gotta cut through the talk and play with real numbers even if you don't want to hear em!!

Cool,
The coolest equates to the best, I want my scion XB to last- I am not trading it in.
Nerdiest Scion- like the Geek shall inherit the earth?
lol. Ur funny.
Physically cooler computers last longer, ask anyone who builds them.
The same is true for any automated, sensor-based electrical control system.
You'll notice that your warranty does not cover many sensors, it specifically excludes them, unless you upgrade your warranty at time of purchase. In other words read the warranty before you call me out on this thread.
Scion XB's have a base warranty of 36K miles not 60K, only specific emissive control parts are covered by the 8 year. I read the waranty and wondered why all those sensors weren't covered-
Sensors are very expensive- ask any mechanic.
So you are saying that looks are more important than function? You sound like an idiot, go back to school, get an education. I would focus on physical sciences and then move on to chemistry, and once you can understand basic physics laws and then move on to designing automotive automation electronics systems- come back and we'll chat about the math of thermodynamics and destructive heat propagation through solid state electronics, and service lifetimes of said materials under loaded conditions.
