Default Oil Filter

When tightening the oil filter on my 2010 tonight, I followed the directions on the filter. When rubber seal makes contact, tighten another 3/4 turn. But, I couldn't quite get 3/4 turn after seal made contact. After about 1/2 turn, the filter seemed to be tight and not able to turn anymore. Seems the actual filter metal lip comes in contact with the mating surface on the engine before 3/4 turn can be achieved. Is this normal? I am using the Toyota YZZF1 filter.

Never tighten the oil filter more than "hand" tighten. Only apply wrenches and such for removal, not tightening.

I never use wrenches for removal or tightening. But like I said, the filter only went about 1/2 turn after seal made contact and won't hand tighten anymore. But from what I noticed the oil filter seal seems very thin and lets the filter actually make metal to metal contact with engine if you follow the installation directions on the actual filter. Oh well maybe I'm overthinking this.

When my filter makes contact, I mark a chalk line as a reference so I know exactly how far 3/4 of a turn is. I always use a filter wrench to tighten the filter, don't know how you would get your hand around such a small filter which is mounted in such a limited space to get a good grip on it.

I changed the oil today on my other car (not an xB) and the oil filter calls for 1 turn after the gasket makes contact and I can tell you that it was tuff to get one turn even with a filter wrench.

My filter never hit the bottom of the boss yet and I use a wrench to tighten it.

FWIW -- my experience is with a good hand tighten (oil lubricated seal), it can fight after a few thousand miles even with a wrench. I'd hate to have to remove it without collapsing the filter if I'd used a wrench originally ! Course, that's just me !

3/4 turn works for me on the oem filter. Hand tightening leads to about 65-70% of a turn.

i usually have to use a wrench to take it off also, with just a hand tighten.

I use Mobile 1 filters on all the cars I change oil in for my family, always hand tighten never a problem.

xb2
05 corolla s
and a 03 audi 1.8t (which is a pain in the ___ to do btw)

Dont ever tighten with a wrench, only for removal
