I stick by my above definition with the clarification for performance, any modification that emulates the look of a performance modification without providing any noticeable performance increase is considered rice. This goes for any non-functional scoop, wings that neither reduce drag or add to downforce, axle-back exhausts, wide-body kits with stock rims, stickers of parts not installed on the vehicle, etc. Body kits that may not lighten the vehicle or improve aerodynamics should be alright as long as they fit the asthetics of the vehicle, have good fitment, are painted to match, and are in good condition. The only caveat is that, if your rear bumper has dual cut-outs, there should be a dual exhaust underneath.

haha just kidding.. but i think most of the parts stores (kragen, pep boys, autozone) sell this rice stuff cause thats what makes the biggest profit. ricers just want fake exhausts and LEDs in thier air vents.
i wish the guy that was visiting on of the people on my block was still around. he was the perfect picture of rise.
why??
well he had turbo stickers on the side of his car. he showed me under his hood. stock motor and claimed he had a turbo. but would not start the car while i was around. failed to see the intercooler as well. he said he had it hidden. his wing was two feet off the back of the car. drilled the install 3 times as he had the drill holes visible. yes he had the big can at the back of the car held in place by wire. his ground effects however were not rice by any means. they matched the car perfectly. now his paint job was completely rice because , ummm lets just say i can tell he didn't pay much for it. as it is starting to peel and the shiney previous color is showing on the rear right quarter panel i used to work on servicing paint boths. why the paint is peeling is because they didn't prep the car. they did not sand down the paint to get it ready to take the new paint. if i see this guy i will get a picture. you people have to see this car

LOL, this is the closest I've seen to fighting on the Scion forums that didn't cross the lines between model years
What is the definition of "rice?" Something people are VERY VERY SENSITIVE about
it's also the quickest way to start an argument on a car forum, after the highly-lauded "imports-vs.-domestics" debate.
btw, if swartz knows what temperature the engine should operate at, and has gotten so far as adding LED's, there's no way he hasn't heard this term before & you this whole thread is just trolling. if anybody needs me to define THAT term, just say the word

yah ive heard the term plenty.
but no one has ever pointed the finger at me befor.
ok so LEDs are a bit rice, you got me.
the guy justr seem to be pointing at every thing he didn't like and calling it rice.
i think if its completely functionable, properly intalled AND has a use, then its not rice.
a dragster style wing on a car that can't do 0-60 in under 5 seconds or top out over 140 mph = rice
just a huge muffler and no other engine mods = rice
stickers of stuff you don't have (besides being retarded) = rice
cutting the stock spings to lower the car = rice
a properly tuned exaust with a CAI/SRI is not rice
a solid sport tuned suspention built with reputable components is not rice
extra guages that are properly installed and that give you importiant info is not rice
now don't get mad! i like my car and im sure you do to, im not pointing any fingers.
this is only my opinion

I read an article a few years ago that the trend started when people saw rally cars on TV. Most of the things that you see on todays rice rocket street cars are actually poor adaptations of what was once true race technology. It is far cheaper to "look fast" then to actually have a high performance car. Then the trend caught on and it just became a popular style. The move the fast and the furious was no help either.
very true.
and i have to point out, in the movie F&F Tokyo Drift i saw several xBs, but non of them were racing or even moving, they were all sittin gin the back stuffed full of A/V equipment.

I prefer understated or subtle mods. Anything that has the effect of "hey look at me!" without a serious performance advantage behind it I would consider rice. Lighting in unusual places, large wings, extremely low profile tires, suspension mods with the sole purpose of covering "wheel gap", etc. The cars you see at track days are so much more interesting IMO. They are harder to spot in traffic, but when I do see one, I can't help myself imagining what it would be like to drive it.
To me, anything that is rice = Something that makes the car look worse, perform worse, or a "performance part" that gains no performance what-so-ever (intake filter cones on a stock intake, exhaust tip, etc.) than it did previously
