Scion killed off by Toyota
Toyota Gives Scion Brand the Axe
I can't say I'm surprised. I did have high hopes for the iM and iA but I haven't seen one on the street since they came out last year.
Alas, the possibilities were endless..
RIP Scion.

Ugh, that sucks. It's sad to see something that was so promising years ago be abandoned now. We all speculate at what the reasons could be, why certain cars had or didn't have certain features, but I wonder what the internal decisions were that ultimately lead to Scion's demise.
RIP Scion. It was a fun few years.

From what I read, Toyota is saying that young people are no longer averse to buying Toyota branded vehicles, so Scion is not needed. The IM and IA are so conventional there really is no longer a reason for the brand to exist, except for the no haggle pricing. Of course, while there may not be official haggling over the price of the vehicle itself, there is definitely old fashioned negotiation over the amount you get for a trade-in.
It looks like Toyota is relying on Mazda to produce their subcompacts since they are selling the IA as a Yaris in Canada. Toyota is partnering with Mazda, and they took control of Daihatsu. Lots of change coming.

All they're doing is a badge swap, their current lineup will still be around (minus the tC). But I agree Scion should've been killed off 5 years ago. They never did anything with the brand to attract young buyers.
You can't stick a 137 hp corolla engine in a 3000 lb Scion iM and think it's going to sell well.

I think Scion knew how to introduce their new brand back in early/mid 2000's. They were selling zillions of the 1st gen xB but weren't making any money from them. Once they had that initial foothold is where they faltered and the 2008 financial crisis finished the job.
Now that people are buying new cars again there's simply better options.
