Default Should I, or shouldn't I?

My boyfriend and I went out car shopping the other day since his car is about to die out on him. We finished the day looking at the Scions, and I really enjoyed the xB and the xD we sat in briefly. So it got me thinking....

I am debating on trading in my '07 Corolla LE for either the xB or the xD. I like the extra room the xB would give me over the xD. I think the Scion (whichever I choose) would give me more bang for my buck. I'm also in that age group that Toyota geared the Scions to, so go figure. My insurance would actually drop a few bucks each month by getting the Scion. However, if the fuel estimates are correct, I get better mileage out of my Corolla (which is to be expected anyway).

I think the main reason for wanting a Scion is because I'm still feeling a bit of buyer's remorse even almost a year later. The good thing is that if I trade in my Corolla, I will be able to pay off the loan completely and have more money in my pocket to put towards the Scion. I am just hoping I can keep my car payments at or below what they are now. I am also debating the Scions because they would give me more room to work with since I plan on moving in the next 6 months and don't want to use a UHaul (I'm a college kid, so I don't have much to haul right now). I also don't know how often I'll be moving over the next few years.

What do you guys think? I know my best bet is to talk to the dealership (stealership?) and see what kind of deal I can get on the Scion and if it's a respectable move to make. My boyfriend is also thinking of getting a Scion, which may make the deal for both of us even sweeter.

Oh, and I don't plan on adding any extras to the package since the xB already comes with features which are important to me (mostly the safety features which aren't standard on my Corolla).

When you trade in a car, you lose money. Bottom line.

I wouldn't recommend trading an 07 Toyota for an 08 Toyota. It's not worth the loss. Besides, the Corolla is a great car.

But... You're asking this question on a Scion enthusiast site, so I'm sure you'll get lots of responses telling you to go for it.

Oh, and regarding this quote... Scions are pure priced, so you'll be paying sticker, even if you buy two of them. Don't expect a "deal" from the salesman.

Yeah, I don't expect much leverage in the price. The difference between invoice and msrp is pretty small. It was a nice thought, though.

Run numbers with your lender and see. I doubt in a year you'll be able to get out from under the Corolla without it hurting you.
As far as deals, as don mentioned Scions are pure priced, but if they have additional dealer fees you can haggle on those especially if it's 2 units at a time.
Good luck!

When I bought the Corolla I put a large down payment on it, and I anticipate gettig over $10k for a trade in, which would allow me to put more $$ towards the Scion.

do a search on http:\\www.kbb.com and see what the value of your corolla would be listed at. make sure to add all the options you have on it. then do your math.

one thing that no one mentioned that i saw you list is that in less then a year your will be out of school and you will probably have student loans to pay back. am i right on this??

as far as either the xb or xd. both are really nice cars. i would suggest both as i drove both before i bought my XB. the reason i didn't like the XD was because i don't like small cars. wasn't the design or anything wrong with them. just my not liking the small aspect.

mt true suggestion would be to let your boyfriend get what he wants and then either try and sell your corolla or keep the corolla and con the boyfriend into letting you drive it. that way you get the best of both worlds...lol but right now i would not do the trade with the dealership. they will add some of what you owe to the price of the corolla into the price of the xb or XD.

ok quoteing this cause i find this funny.

Oh, and I don't plan on adding any extras to the package since the xB already comes with features which are important to me (mostly the safety features which aren't standard on my Corolla).

let me explain something about XB or XD and modding. lol it starts with people saying this and moves to oh that is cool or damn i need that and oh that is going to look sweet. yeah we all say that i won't add to much to the car. lol welcome to scionlife where modding the car is our crack....lol

Yeah, I will have student loans to start with in about a year. However, I'm going to have car payments either way. According to kbb I should get about $13k for my corolla. The car was bought back in May, so it's still less than a year old. Too bad I can't use the sticker price for other used Corollas which are the same make/model/mileage as my car for leverage. That would be nice.

According to my parents I also have a very nice graduation present coming my way.

Don't forget you'll have to pay tax and license fees all over again.

If they give blue book on your trade (rarely happens) you're still looking at increasing your car loan by about 5 grand!

Might I ask why you purchased a Corolla less than a year ago if it wasn't the right car for you?

You only have to pay taxes once on an item. She paid taxes back on the 2007. The only taxes she'll be paying are on the difference in cost. (i.e. if she paid $10k for the 07, and the xb is 12k, then she'd pay taxes on $2k)

That is exactly how it worked when i traded in my 2006 xb for my 08.

If your car is in PERFECT condition, expect to get the KBB GOOD price MINUS ~$1000.

Dealers do this to cover washing the car, changing the oil and break pads and anythign else that they might need to do (or at least say that they need to do)

Uh.....No.

You pay taxes on everything you buy. You buy a Corolla you pay sales tax on the purchase price. Then you turn around and sell it to the dealer (aka trade it in) to buy an xB, you have to pay taxes again on the new car as well.

Hi,

You might try to sell your car private party to lessen the loss on it.

I just traded an 05 Altima 6 cyl for an 08 Scion xB. I've only had the Scion for a week, but I am loving this car. My wife, son, and I were in it for over two hours yesterday driving around town and we were still enjoying it when we pulled in the driveway.

Good luck in your decision,

Alan

I was thinking about getting an xD instead of the xB, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for all your help. Unfortunately, the kids in the parking garages are inconsiderate and I've got a tiny dent above one of my tires.

They would take away $1000? A car wash, touch up, oil change, etc. doesn't take $1000. I just had the oil changed, and at the same dealership I was looking at the Scion. Now I know why they are called "stealerships."

I bought the Corolla because I'm female and made the stupid mistake of going by myself to look at cars.

The only thing that would kill the trade would be that my car payments are unlikely to stay around the same price they are now....unless I got the xD....which I still might do.

I'll have to check around and made a decision at some point. Thanks for the insight guys.

Nope Not in Missouri......... I buy a Collolla 9 monthas ago for 17K, I pay taxes on 17K... I trade that in on an 08xB & get 15k in trade.... I pay 17k for the xB... I transfer plates from the Corolla to the xB, I pay taxes ONLY on 2 thousand... I have done this many times & many more with harleys...
PLUS......... say I sold my 04 Ford 150 ( for 4 thousand) before i bought that Corola 9 months ago.. & I transfreed plates ffrom the Ford to the new Colrolla & had to pay taxes ONLY the difference between 4K & 17k....
The chump that buys your old car does the same thing.... If you DO NOT trade in & transfer plates, then you pay the full tax......... That's how we do it in MO.... NO BULL.........

Here in PA you only pay sales tax on the difference leftover after the trade in value is subtracted.

Here in socialist California the sales tax is always calculated on the full sale price of the vehicle (new or used), then the trade-in value is deducted from that amount. Aaaarrrggh!

in jan of last year, i went to the dealer to trade in my 06 xB with only 11k miles for the new Release Series 4 model.

I paid ~$16,500 for my car, in cash. it was in mint condition and you know how much they were gona give me for it?

$11k.

and the RS4 was like 18k.

so to move from the new box to the new RS model, i would have to pay another 7k out of pocket?

my total expenses would haev been $23k+ and i would have only a single (but hawt) xB to show for it.

i stuck with my current box and saved the 7k for gas and taco bell. l0l
