Default Two Issues in Owners Manual?

Has anybody browsed their owners manual and noted:

1) p47 [NOTICE] Do Not disconnect the battery cables before contacting your Scion dealer ??? This is repeated again on p55.

Both notices are in the area covering the airbag SRS but the warnings themselves are ambiguous. What does Toyota plan to have the Scion dealer do or tell us that they couldn't have printed in the warning? Are they concerned that disconnection / reconnection will fire the airbags and if so, how does calling the dealer first help?

***and***

2) p118 [NOTICE] ...<> When tires must be repaired or replaced, have them repaired or replaced by the nearest Scion dealer or an authorized tire dealer. The tire pressure warning valves and transmitters will be affected by the installation or removal of tires. ??? Does this simply mean that TCC doesn't think that everyone is qualified to reset the system after service (at the button under the dash) or are they suggesting the sensors will be damaged?

No way can I see myself buying my tires at the dealer. Who are they "authorizing" as an alternative to the dealer? I frankly don't need this feature but I don't want some light glowing on the dash for no reason indefinitely. I keep a hosed dial-type tire gauge in each car at all times anyway... The manual even goes on to state that the system may malfunction with aftermarket rims, OEM rims with some types of tires, or due to window tint, snow, or tire chains. Sounds like a pain!

Anybody understand the part about the battery or have dealings with this tire pressure warning system? What happened if you went to a rim/tire upgrade or disconnected the battery to install some new accessory mod?

I saw that yesterday while skimming through the manual at breakfast.

I wrote it off as lawyer babble possibly even further degraded by translation issues. I would guess that the next person to call their dealer before disconnecting the battery will be the first to do so.

I have spent some time looking through the owner's manual for my wife's Prius and there is a lot of this kind of goofy stuff in that manual too.

Just as an example, lots of folks here have installed the HID kit and I did not hear anyone say they contacted their dealer or that they had problems.

I took the TPMS stuff as a general lawyer driven thing that basically says, "If you do anything to the tires or wheels that makes the TPMS quit working it's not our problem unless we were the ones working on it". What are the odds of you doing something to make it quit? Pretty low unless you just leave the sensors out.

I bet they have had somebody put on after market wheels without the sensors and then claim warranty. Just like everything else there is a reason there are stupid warning labels on packages. It means somebody tried to iron their shirt while wearing it and sued the company that made the iron. Now there is a warning label.

Bottom line I would not worry too much about it.

i will tell you that the TPMS sensors can be damaged if you do not handel them carfully during tire dissmount and mount. but if you are at ANY garage and this happens then its that businesses duty and resposability to replace the sensor.

also like you said its lawyer talk. i say a jar of peanut butter the other day that said " caution: may contain peanuts or peanut products "
