and VSC flashing at 17k miles? 
that's not right

With Toyota, any time the eng light comes on the VSC light will also come on. There is a reason for that. If the eng light is for an engine sensor or other part related to performance of the engine overall, the VSC will also light. If it is pure emissions only, the VSC will normally not come on.
Unfortunatly, you will have to go to the dealer for a warranty issue with only 17k on the vehicle.
