xB and xA... Rest in Peace!
Thinning the Herd
Scion will kill xA, xB in December

LOS ANGELES -- Toyota's Scion youth brand will stick to its promise of short product life spans when it ceases production of the xA and xB hatchbacks in December.
The two small cars will be replaced by unspecified vehicles in early 2007.
Scion promised to keep its product lineup fresh and hip. The downside is that the company may end up killing a product -- in this case the boxy xB -- that has proved to be more popular than expected.
The xA and xB debuted in California in June 2003, but the brand's national launch was not until the following June.
When they reached the United States, both vehicles were derived from Toyota's existing Japan-market fleet -- the xA from the ist, and the xB from the bB.
From their launch through August, Scion has sold 79,084 xA units and 144,909 xB units.
Scion officials declined to give details about the replacement vehicles. They likely will be Japan-market vehicles configured to meet U.S. crash and emissions standards.
The third vehicle in the Scion lineup, the tC coupe, will stay. It went on sale in June 2004.
"Scion is a laboratory for change and we will continue to experiment and evolve to meet the needs of our customers," Mark Templin, Scion's vice president, said in a press release.
"We're ready to move into our next product phase."
John Roth, Internet manager of Roseville (Calif.) Toyota-Scion, said Toyota has kept a tight lid on what to expect from the replacement vehicles.
"We are hearing about comparable redesigned vehicles," Roth said. "But we're also told not to rule out a clean sheet."

The 2008 xB will be similar to the t2B concept vehicle, it will come out early next year. Then the xD will come out mid year and be a upsized xB with a more powerful engine. The 2008 tC will be based on the concept Fuse.
