Technically severed did help you lol. Do a bounce test if your car bounces a lot it's bad. When your strut goes you usually know it just based on the ride quality, you'll get really bouncy in the front end going over even small bumps...

Have a look visually as well and see if they leaked.

 

its simple drive it down the road struts and shocks create friction which in return makes heat, if it's cold its old, change them

I have some with roughly 30k on them...

 

I'm just past 35,000 and have no rough roads anywhere close to me.
