17x8 or 17x7 wheel?

Hey guys, which rim would I want/need for a 225/45-17 tire? What would be the difference between the two?

Looking at the Konig Runaways in hyper gray with some Ziex 912 tires.

Would the 17x8 just be wider? Is that all? Would it fit the tire the same or?

Appreciate it!

VonStarINC 03-14-2009 09:28 PM

Uh yes 8 inches is wider than 7 inches

The tire fittment would also change, yes.

Difference between those sizes really doesn't matter, go with the cheaper IMO

Invertalon 03-14-2009 09:31 PM

Same price.

Would the 8 inch fill my fender a little more? I just want to know which size makes more "sense".

here is mine with 17x7 with a 225 45 17

well as far as fitting flush, its going to rely on the offset as well, and a 8 inch wide wheel will fill a fender more than a 7, but the offset will define how close to the fender it sits.

Coryjames what were you dropped on this pic? Ksports? I am in the market for tires and def like the way yours looks. I am currently dropped on df210 and looking for a similar stance. I have 17x7 rims as well.

coryjames 03-14-2009 11:15 PM

im ok ksports

Invertalon 03-14-2009 11:21 PM

Looks like the 17x7 wheels im looking at run 16.6lbs per wheel, quite a bit less than the 22lb stockies. Hopefully I can maintain or even gain some MPG with my new wheels, even though the tire will be "stickier".

Now to debate 17x7 or 17x8... Help me pick! haha

coryjames 03-14-2009 11:32 PM

what wheels?

Invertalon 03-14-2009 11:58 PM

Konig Runaways

225/45-17 tires will be stretched a little on 8" wide wheels, which will tweak the angle of the lip protectors on the 912 tires.
For 17x8 wheels I would step up to 235/45 tires.

Since mpg is one of your considerations, I would recommend going with the lighter 17x7 +44 wheels and staying with the lighter 225/45-17 tires.

CIONIDE has approved your selection. You may add to your cart and proceed to checkout now. :P

Yeah I was wondering about the tire-stretch and all that, which is why I wanted to consult the "people who know!". I don't want to risk the integrity of the tire.

I *thought* about stepping up to an 18" as well, but in reality, I just want to go a little bigger, not much bigger. I don't want to suffice ride quality too much and I want to keep the great mileage I get. The 17's looks great on the xB without looking over the top. They are light wheels with the 17x7 being only 16.6lbs a piece, the tire weighs about 22.1lbs approx (but for the 215 size). So all together looking at a 38-40lb weight per tire, which is less than stock. Very nice!

Keep you updated with the order status! Might take some time due to special order though once I do order to arrive :(

Here's another pic you can use as a reference. I have 17x7 et40 wheels with 205/50/17 tires. A very unpopular tire choice, but I too wanted to keep the weight as close to stock as possible. My rims are 20# each and I have Falken 912 tires. I actually have 15mm spacers that I intend to put on the rear (someday). When I need a tire change I will go for 225/45/17. Or I might just get new rims!

I would choose the 17x7 with 225/45 tires for the reasons CIONIDE stated.

Ordered!

Went with the 17x7 with the 225/45-17!

Can't wait!

Contacted discount tire to check how long it would be for my order... Luckily, they have them in stock (usually special order) and will have them shipped out by Friday. Should have them the Thursday after. Not too shabby! I was expecting much worse time-wise with my luck and special order products...

Here are a pic of the wheels I have chosen:

nice wheels man!
I am going with the same wheels, but only in the shadow-black color.
I actually had the same question as you... pertaining to the width. but now its been answered!

I am ordering mine... when DTD has their 100+ off sale... which I hope will be soon!!!

I thought about the shadow-black color, but I didn't want to be black-on-black. Be sure to post pics when you install them, very curious to how they look!

I have a newbie question related to this topic...

How thick (aspect ratio) of a tire will fit on a 17x7 or 18x8 rim with no rub issues at all. I drive on some bumpy roads and want the most tire/cushion possible and I want to replace my stock wheels.

For example, would 225/55-17 tires rub or possibly hit the fender when hitting bumps?

Thanks for any input

CIONIDE 03-31-2009 02:23 PM

If you want to keep as much sidewall as possible, go with the 17's.

How large a tire you can fit will depend on the offset of the wheels, and if your xB is lowered at all.

iamham 03-31-2009 09:18 PM

No, its not lowered. I was thinking about these wheels, but I dont know what the offsset is:

http://www.victoriatire.com/wheel_TE...201%20CHARCOAL

I would like to go with the 18x8, possibly with a 235/50 tire if that wont rub...
