Default 19" Wheels vs 18" Wheels and Road Noise - xB

Hello, new to the forums. Can you please guide me in a better direction?

Has anyone gone to a 19" wheel and hated it? Just picked up a used 08 xB and it has 19" TRD wheels on it. They look great, but the road noise is out of control. I've had wheels ranging up to 24" and tires up to 38" on vehicles I have owned in the past and the road noise on these 235/35r19 in the Scion seems like it is equal to a 38" super swamper.

I'm heading to a shop tomorrow to check out my tire options, but I am thinking I need to go to a smaller wheel to get some more sidewall on the tire to fix this issue.

I am not willing to put the sound dampening in this car so it is either some new wheels and tires or I'm selling it.

For those of you with 18" wheels, is the road noise substantial? I know this isn't a luxury vehicle, but based on some searches online, I'm not the only one that thinks the road noise is a bit much.

I really don't want to go stock and I'd probably do a 17 if the 18s are not much better.

Thanks

Often times wider performance tires get noisy, especially when they get worn. Consider replacing the tires. New tires should be much quieter. Also do some research as some models of tires get better ratings from people for noise than others. Typically high performance are louder.

If I am not mistaken there are about 4 categories of tires

1- Performance (Better for lower profile status and high drivability on track or street)

2-Winter (Just as it states- Studless tires for traction on snow or ice- Popular on RWD cars)

3-Summer (Never really got the sense of these...but they provide great traction in wet road conditions)

4-Grand Touring (These are the one which are commonly used by higher end luxury cars and provide the best comfort and tire to road contact- which also sub categorize into Grand Touring Performance or All Season- Also most priciest but you get better tread life and warranties)

I have always bit the bullet and gotten the Grand Touring All Season type tires....Yea cost more but when it comes to road noise and year round driving conditions..def best bang for the buck..... Hope this helps

It definitely all depends on tires, brand, and type. My personal favorite are Yokohama S-drive. I had them in 18 inch size, brand new and used, and they are very very quiet. When I had them brand new on my Z4 even with the top down or up and window open, I heard noises coming from the wind that I never heard when I owned some Falkens and some Nitto tires on the same car. I am currently on 19 inch TRD wheels too that came with BFG tires on them and I think they are loud too. looking forward to wearing them out and getting new tires either on my 18 in Huff wheel or my TRD 19's.

Don't think it really matters on size . Yes a 40 /18 will ride a bit better than a 35 / 19 . Spend the cash on good rubber , don't cheap out .

Thank you to those who responded, I appreciate the feedback and help with the issue.

On Friday, I had some new tires put on. Went with non-directional and a tight tread pattern.

This made all the difference in the world. I was ready to give the car away when it had the other tires on it, these are a lot... a ton better.

On Saturday, I had the wheels all sanded down and polished and they turned out looking like new. Finished off the day with all new tint. This car is starting to grow on me a little now, I kind of like it.

The previous owner bought the 19" trd wheels and whoever had them must have thought the sidewalk was a guide for going down the road. They were tore up, but since the repairs, they look brand new, I am totally impressed with the wheel refinishing. After driving this thing a couple days now, if you curb an xB multiple times, you really suck at driving. These roller skates are very easy to maneuver.

As far as I am concerned, the issues are resolved and I'm happy I bought it. Thanks again all for your feedback.

I'm currently looking for tires myself. I like the treads of HP tires while the GT ones are dull looking. Shooting for quiet tires but the ones that are quiet have that serrated strip on the side and I hate that! Best one so far I think is the Cooper Zeon RS3.

I always look for a tire pattern that has a lot of sipes, seems to be much quieter than one with large block patterns found on many high performance tires. Shadezz tires appear to have plenty of sipes on the side, which is why i assume he gets the quiet ride.
