My rims and tires just arrived today... I was so excited and disappointed. I mounted the front wheels and there was no problem... I then proceed with the rear wheels and here comes the disappointment... my rims is touching the brake caliper... I need spacers...

Will I have enough thread on the stock studs to be considered "safe" if I put 5mm spacer in the rear? How many full turn of the lug nuts I need to have to be considered safe? I am heading to a local discount tire to pick some up...any help will be appreciated.

 

I would be a little hesitant to use spacers on the stock studs. Maybe Discount Tire can hook you up with longer studs + spacers or check these out: http://www.fastscions.com/index.asp?...S&Category=374

 

I went to Pep boys to see if they carry any extended studs...they don't...but the shop manager sd 6-7 full turn of the lug nut should be OK... I'm still going to get some extended studs just in case. A friend of mine has a friend who owns a wheels and tires shop. I'll be stopping by Friday to pick up some extended studs and put them on.

 

wouldnt it be ok if you just torque the lugnut on the stock stud with wheelspacer at OEM spec of 76 ft-lb ?

 

NO, you need to have the stress spread out over more surface area of the stud, or you run the risk of the lug nut pulling off under the stresses of acceleration or braking when in a turn.

 

good info cionide. my friend with a bsp xb w/18''s is running 3mm spacers with stock studs and aftermarket lugs...i should let him know.

 

3mm (less than 1/8") is probably safe with the stock studs, but when you get into 5mm (almost 1/4") or more, I suggest longer studs.

Contrary to what you may have heard in the past; size DOES matter.
