Really?? Does that little cover piece stay on just as tight as before?

Yup !
only diff is the blade can now be lifted away from the glass.
The "Tab" prevented the ability to pull the blade away.

I wonder why Toyota put that tab on there in the first place? I'm guessing maybe the rear windows shatters easy or something like that.

one guy on xdforum posted this...

"maybe to keep the wiper from chattering in the carwash or getting ripped off? honestly, I don;t se the issue cleaning the rear window with it the way it is. I figured out pretty quick how to take it apart and fix it. but take the car thru a carwash that uses brushes and let's see if my theory is correct"

Why not just take the plastic cap off when you want to clean it and then you don't have to worry about cutting out a tab permanently?

I also just went to fill up with gas and decided to check it out, the xD's plastic cap part seems to be on a hinge. Probably so you can life the plastic part up and wiper up to clean your window.

i checked it out. it pops off easily, but getting it completely snapped back on takes a bit. i was able to catch one side, then the other after a few tries. maybe in time it'll get easier.

I checked mine too yesterday afternoon. My 'tab' is a fairly thick piece of plastic on the hinged cap. I'm not sure how I'd get it off. I think I'll just leave it the way it is for now and just open up the cap when I need the wiper to fully come off the rear window.

asurjc, pull lightly on the top of the tab on the wiper side. it'll easily pop off. like i said though, getting it back on at first is tricky. once you figure it out, it's not hard at all.

I don't understand the need to cut the tab at all. The whole piece is on a hinge that opens up to allow the wiper to be moved away from the window. Why cut the tab?

i never said cut the tab, i just said remove the cover piece. i disagree with cutting the tab, as said in a car wash, it might rip the wiper off.

Yeah I figured this out when I gave it a good yank. I undid the hinge to get a better look at the tab we were talking about and saw that it certainly isn't going anywhere. This is still useful information though, it will help me greatly later on down the road when I need to replace the rear windshield wiper blade.

i agree on that!!! once i saw how far out it comes without that piece on, i was like "wow, this will be so much easier to clean and change!!!"
