Side door gash

About two months ago I found a gash on the passenger door towards the bottom. My insurance wouldnt cover it unfortunately. Is there always to repair it or would it be cheaper to take into the shop???

pictures would help in this instance. is it paint damage to the door? damage to the lower lip?
