Default TRD muffler?

Does the TRD muffler give any real horsepower increase? Or does it just sound louder?

I was debating buying one, but don't really want my car to sound like a weed wacker, I was unsure how this would sound. Thinking of getting this and a CAI. Would it help out horsepower any?

Just for sound. There might technically be 1-2 hp gained from it, but you will never be able to tell, so it's not worth counting.

If you want to hear it though, just check Youtube for some videos. I don't think it sounds that bad. Don't know if it's really worth the money though... unless you can find a deal on it used or otherwise.

I just seen one on eBay for like $220 shipped, so I thought it was a good price considering some places are selling it for over $400. I like my car being quiet though so probably won't get it if it is not going to help anything.

If anyone else is looking for one, check out the one on eBay it seems to be a good deal if you're looking for one.

you wont feel anything unless you replace the entire catback. it does give the car a nice purr though, so its probably not the best for you.

When I put on my air filter and removed the stock air box there was a noticeable power gain. My poorly calibrated butt dyno noticed immediately. In contrast The TRD muffler (installed after) sounds nice, but I noticed zero performance gains.

It sounds nice IMHO, but you can hear it inside the car. If you like quiet, you won't like it. I personally love the sound and the level. Never obnoxious or offensive. Under light load at any legal speed you have to listen to hear it. Conversation or the radio can cover it up.

The sound is pretty sweet. You can hear the VVT a little, and it sounds like a tiny performance engine. NO rasp, no F1, and no backfires. There is a bunch of awfully small tubing and another resonator upstream. I may eventually make a system between the cats and the TRD, but I'm worried that the sound will increase too much.

Good review! Thanks. Yeah, I didn't want it sounding obnoxious or anything.

I always see those guys with a Honda Civic (or insert any small car) and they pull away at a green light and it sounds like theres a small airplane taking off next to you.... and you're only going about 15mph. Then as they pull away (thinking you are trying to race them), you see one of those mufflers that look like they belong on a Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel. So that was basically what I was trying to avoid.

But the way it sounds, that muffler doesn't sound so bad compared to the Autozone ones. Does anyone have links to the above mentioned youtube videos?

Thanks again for the replies!

They dont have many specs or claims about HP, but they got a video and i'm lovin that sound.

That seems like a much better option for the price. You would think with a CAI and the axle back system it would have to help it breathe.

CAI, yes; axleback, no... the restrictive piping is located between the second cat and the flange for the axleback. take a look under there, its like a kinked-up garden hose. however, there quite a good distance of straight piping, so if you wanted to replace your catback with a much larger, better-breathing pipe but didnt want a lot of noise, you could throw on a few glasspacks or other straight through mufflers without causing really any additional restriction. it will obviously still be louder than factory, as its the restrictive piping that also muffles.

Makes sense, I haven't actually crawled under there much to check it out. I halfway seen it when it was getting it's first oil change, but I didn't look as good as I should have. Maybe I will start with the CAI and wait for something better to come out for exhaust.

I got most of the stuff I wanted to do done on the car, so now I am just kind of looking for more things I can mess with.

I got precisionmuffler's axle on my XD and I'm loving the sound but I think it lost about 1-5hp because it seem slower to me.

Im a tC owner...so not looking to crash an xD thread...lol but on my Scion I have a CAI and axle back with custom larger tubing... but just my 2 cents... if you like a fairly quiet ride... I wouldn't go with anything more aggressive than a TRD exhaust. I think the TRD might add a couple hp at best with the rest of the exhaust being stock...but it is fairly quiet & has a nice exhaust note without sounding "ricy". I know a couple people that have the TRD axle back on their Scions and really like it. It really has a nice deep tone with a CAI & the TRD axle back. My exhaust is pretty loud...but then mine is modded (not TRD) and wide open from the engine all the way back. I like the hp gains...but some days I honestly do get a little tired of the db level inside the car.

^^I still want an answer. WTF?
I would think unless you straight piped everything from the header back with 3" pipe and you lost all your backpressure, would you see any kind of perf drop?!?!?
No offense but I'm disbelieving until i hear some second opinions.

just once again, I dont have this myself, but its the one i want...i think

it seems slower because the increase in power was not proportional to the increase in noise from the new muffler.

I only have axle back and custom CAI that go to my front bumper, how can I tell? it seem that is taking longer to hit 60mph when I enter fwy. or maybe is just me because is really loud in the car when you hit 4000rpm.

definitely the latter... if the car actually is going noticably slower, its because of something else.

but if you like deep sound muffler, precisionmuffler is way to go because I heard an xd with the TRD is not that loud at all you can hardly hear it from the out side of the car, or the N1 style that just make your car sound civic on road so year that is my a pinion
