Default anyone noticed oil usage?

My hubby changes my oil in my '08 xD and he's noticed twice now that the oil is down about a half quart right around 3500 miles after he's changed it.
I don't see any leaks on the basement floor. This car shouldn't be burning oil, should it????

Has anyone else noticed this?

It's normal. All cars will burn oil, even a brand new vehicle. How many miles do you have on your xd? Half a quart is a little much if it's under 30k.

Since it's cold outside, it should be easy to spot if your car is burning oil the "wrong way" or burning the "normal way." If you see a light blue or blue smoke coming out of the exhaust, then it's burning oil. If it's just a white cloud, that condensation and not burning/slightly burning some oil.

It has just over 30K, 33 I think. I've never noticed the oil level going down in previous cars that I've owned. That's why I thought it was abnormal.

There is a TSB out about "excessive oil consumption" on some of the xD's. There was someone else on here a while ago that had the problem. the procedure to diagnose it sounded like a pain to me, but it might be worth looking into if you are having problems with oil consumption.

Yeah, I believe the oil consumption issue was mainly the '08 xDs. My '09 doesn't burn oil even during my 10,000 mile intervals and towing trailers a lot.

There is a TSB out for this issue. It is a simple flash of the ECU for new fuel mapping and is covered under the emissions warranty (8/90).

Do you know what the fuel mapping covers? Is the problem to little fuel or to much?

Looks like I get to check my oil level soon to see if the xD is slirping it down. I too would like to know what the issue is prior to a reflash.

The TSB doesn't state what the flash changes unfortunately. Apparently the engineers think the mechanics don't need to know.

So, my hubby confesses after I told him that I asked on here about oil usage, that he never checks the oil after he fills it, he just puts the recommended amount in.
I think I'd better keep a check on it myself.

So, I'd kind of forgotten about this oil usage 'problem' until yesterday as I was driving, I could hear my valves rattlin', so when I got home, I checked my oil and there was NOTHING on the dipstick!!!!
My hubby put in 1 and 1/2 quarts to get it up to where it should be. So, it was that low. He had changed it about 3000 miles ago and put in the 4.5 quarts like the book says.

This morning I called the dealer and asked about this problem and that I read online that there was a TSB about a problem with the '08's using oil and something that could be done in the computer. They didn't know anything about it!! He said that I could bring it in and leave it for a few days and they'd see if they could figure something out. I'm not too thrilled about that.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.

I think that TSB is almost three years old so it is not a surprise that the dealer does not know anything about it. I say call back and demand they look up the TSB for you or find the TSB online and give them the code number.

I found the correct TSB # S-SB-0029-09 and called another dealer that I thought would help me, but they only sell/service Toyotas (not Scions). He said he'd 'try' to see what he could do. I told him I'd call him back. I'd like someone who has done this before to do it.

So, so far one dealer wants me to leave it for a couple of days and maybe they can figure out what's wrong. And my hubby and I have left messages at two other dealers and they won't return our calls.

The one guy that said he'd try to help me said that there are other things that can cause oil usage, so he wasn't too willing to look up the TSB. He wanted me to print it out and bring it with me.

I know I don't have any leaks because I park in my basement garage.

This is so frustrating!!!

Yay! Just heard back from a dealer that I had sent an email to the service dept and the nice young lady had her manager look it up.

I have an appointment next week

Got my re-flash yesterday and hubby changed my oil last night.
I'll see if it worked! I hope so.

From 2 weeks ago when he put in 1.5 qts, it was already down a quart.
I wonder how many people have this problem and don't even know it?

How many miles did the car rack up in those two weeks?

I think 900-1000 miles. I bought gas three times and go about 300 miles before I fill up.

My 08 hasn't had this issue but I've only owned it for a year. Rapid oil consumption might be contributed to how quickly you accelerate as among other factors.
