Im pretty new to cars, can someone explain to me the difference between
1. exhaust manifolds
2. exhaust headers
what are the differences?
how does it correlate to an exhaust system, intake, etc.
i tried googling things up and reading it, but its all mumbo jumbo to me, and i figure there are a lot of experts on here who can prob explain it to me better. give it a shot. the more input the better.

**i read somewhere we might have to find some sort of wrap for the exhaust to make it perform better? i have a strup axle back exhaust, anyone know what thats all about? im thinking its all good and nothing to worry about. but it doesnt hurt to ask.

 

do u mean intake manifolds?
the intake manifolds is connect to the intake which it suck air which locate on the back of the engine.

header is on the front which you can see when you pop your hood. the air come out from the header and all the way to the axle back.

some people do wrap their headers to hold the heat temperature down. but that is not a good idea.

 

Yes this is true except on the xD the intake manifold is on the front of the engine in ours it looks like 4 black plastic tubes going into the front of the engine you can see them when u take the engine cover off. And as far as an exhaust header it is a manifold ours is a straight flow off the back of the engine kinda like the yaris.

 

usually the term "exhaust manifold" means you have a turbo. Those are usually short pipes that come off the engine and feed the turbo. When ppl say "Headers" they dont have a turbo. Neither of them have anything to do with an intake. But both of them are the first part of your exhaust.

just for fun, an axle-back means only the last part of the exhaust. From the rear axle... back to the end. hope this helps

 

No.... turbo manifold = turbo. exhaust manifold = stock.

 

I gotta give that to ya, exhaust manifold is more of a stock term. But to be fair, Ive heard it called both. Plus people mix up these terms all the time... the surrounding information helps.

A header is specially shaped to increase power while a manifold is just a set of pipes joined together. In other words a header is a fancy manifold.

 

just keep googling. also there is only 1 header for exhaust. not plural headers

 

so where do they all go? the exhaust header in the back, intake manifold in the front? so the exhaust header, is that the same thing as an exhaust system aka axle back.cat back? or that completely different? if so, do they connect?

 

yes not all exhaust headers "manifolds" come off the back of the engine but the xD's does. the exhaust is in a series of pieces you have your header then with the xD it goes to some filtering elements like a cat and a resonator and then some basic pipe's that run to the axleback which is what it sounds like it starts at the rear axle and goes all the way to the muffler and out hope that helps a little.

 

ohhhhhs, that makes a lot more sense now, would the manifold be the same thing as your engine? or is that just connected. sorry for chaining all these questions, im just so damn interested in cars now lol

 

no the word manifold is realy only used by people that have turbos on there car so unless ur going to get into all of that u can just call it a header its pretty much the same thing just no port for the turbo to bolt on. and the header is a seperate piece that bolts onto the engine block and looks like 4 small pipes going into one big one.
