How's the new car - have you gotten used to the linear torque / HP power band yet? It's a lot different from the VW eh?

Therefore, I should visit them again around 10,500 and it will be the last free oil change. However, if people go by the book at get their first oil change at 5,000 miles, the last free service is still around 10,000 miles (5,000 > 8,000 > 11,000).

I also looked at my receipt and they changed a gasket of some sort. I'm not sure if this is standard procedure for oil changes or am I driving too hard.
The service guy at my dealer told me I have to come in before it actually hits 10,000 or Scion won't cover the oil change and tire rotation. I was advised we only get 2 free ones and they only rotate the tires on the 2nd one?

Folks - if your dealer is balking about the 5K or 10K service, you need to speak to Toyota of America. This isn't rocket science - the deal is you get complimentary service at 5K and 10K - there should be no qualifiers.

Be assertive! I see that most folks with questions are younger (20s). You must stand up and escalate the issue to a supervisor if you feel you are being ignored or minimized. The agreement is iron clad - you get oil and inspection at 5K and 10K - JUST DO IT.

Note there is no regional difference on this one. Your local dealer gets paid from Toyota USA for complimentary service. It's not much, but it is still profit. You paid for it - get it done.

I'll photocopy the manual that says I get a free oil change (and tire rotation) with the 5k and 10k. I will literally wave that piece of paper in their face, and saying that they are legally obligated to give me the service as written on the Manual. That's what I would do when I take my 2009 xD into the free service.

Linear? You mean a complete lack of torque across the entire band? lol! My Golf put out just over 180 pounds of torque at 1,900 RPM. It didn't drop off very quickly, either. I think the xD puts out about 40 pounds at 1,900 RPM. I miss the torque... but I'm having fun with upper-RPM horsepower, which the TDI did not have.

When me and my wife bought our 2010 XD on 9-11-09 the stealership informed us that we have three free oil changes however I didn't like the fact that they said we had to bring the vehicle in every three months, the manual states every 5K or 6 months and they said the car uses only a synthetic oil;A synthetic oil will not break down in three month's what BS, what a waste of good oil. I plan on making a complaint first chance I can get the Toyota USA NO#, allowing a stealership to pull such a BS stunt is truly unacceptable, I think they are only after depleting the free oil changes so they can get into my wallet faster.

my "stealership" said two free from scion, but every 6 months OR 5k miles. and they told me synthetic blend. which is what they've been putting in.

good luck?

I had no such problems with my 5K service. Tires rotated and oil changed (I watched, since it was a slow morning at the shop). Completed in under an hour. They tried to upsell me an A/C filter before the car went into the shop, but I mentioned I'd installed one already (and how to do it), so they wouldn't bother going though my glovebox. But that's it, no charge - since there was no additional work.

The only thing that bothered me was the sticker telling me to come in 3000 miles later. That's fine for owners that put 3000 miles every six months on their cars, or hammer their cars on race tracks. But not when you hit 4850 miles in 3 months of ownership.

Toyota keeps a national database called Dealer Daily, so they should be able to prove to you if the 5k or 10K service was performed already. If they can't prove it, you should still get you two free services unless time and/or mileage was already surpassed.

It's suggested at 5k and 10k, but really you're just guaranteed 2 free oil changes, including synth blend, filter, and tire rotation - which can be obtained up to 12k miles or 18 months from time of purchase. If you want you can do them a week apart, but you only get the 2. It used to be 3 but I think it was changed for 08 models.

Good luck with the free oil changes, y'all. I took it in just shy of 5K miles. They cheerfully changed the oil and rotated the tires, and sent me on my way.

I was instantly suspicious when I left the lot. The car didn't sound the same, and I was definitely lacking power at higher rpm's. I took a closer look at the receipt, and saw a part:
Number: 00000-OIL10-50 Description: Bulk Oil
Oh no they didn't ... It looks like I now have 10w50 oil in this thing. When I tried to leave work at 11:30pm (it was near freezing out) and the car stuttered and took two tries to start, it basically confirmed it.

I called the dealership, and they insist that the receipt is wrong. "That's just a generic entry on the receipt, we don't even have 10w50. It has a zero weight oil in it." They were not in the least concerned when I insisted that my car was not running right since they changed the oil. Not believing them, I drained the oil and put in Mobil1 0w20. It's running better, sounds like it did before, and starts perfectly. Needless to say, I'm never going back to that dealership for service.

So yeah, if you take advantage of the free oil changes be sure they do it right ><

Its unfortunate that so many dealers dont care enough to read emails... we have known that the 2010 xD's take Synthetic oil since January 09... recommended Scion oil changes are every 5,000 miles, and yes you get the first 2 free...

Might I also add that I bought my xD before I started working for my current dealership, and when I went for the 10K oil change at the dealership I bought it from they tried making my pay for the tire rotation/inspection of belts etc. I told them to pound sand... they didnt rotate the tires but did give me the oil change free... they wanted over $100 to rotate the tires/inpect etc, saying that it was an hours worth of labor... Lets just say I never walked back into that dealership... probably never will again either, and they are located within 3 minutes of my house... I prefer the hour drive to Wellesley, where I know I wont get screwed...

After reading some posts, I have a question or 2. My 08 xD needs an oil change at 20k miles. I called the dealership and was advised they use Penzoil 5w30 in the car. Not synthetic. That's extra. Price $27.15. Tires rotated $20. No balancing, just rotated.

I called Monroe, $19.99, they have 5W20 valvoline. Guy said he's never seen 0W20 in regular valvoline, only seen it in synthetic. He also said the filter/cartridge is the same as in the toyotas. I asked Matrix, he said yes. I was concerned maybe they don't see that many xD's for oil changes.

Question: Should I be using 0W20 weight now that it's getting colder out. Book recommends it. Or is 5W20 also acceptable? Why would the dealer use a weight of oil that is not even recommended in the book?

Is the filter the same as in other toyotas? I thought our filters were a newer style than on other toyotas?

Oh.. and Sam's club will rotate and balance tires for about $16...

Thanks for any help.

Don't go there.

True. Valvoline only has a 0w20 in their SYNpower "Fully Synthetic" (quotes used on purpose, since their synthetic is a Group 3 oil, which is synthesized from crude oil base stocks).

Question: Should I be using 0W20 weight now that it's getting colder out. Book recommends it. Or is 5W20 also acceptable
I would. You'll have easier starting and better oil flow at start-up (less wear on your engine).

Why would the dealer use a weight of oil that is not even recommended in the book?
More profit. Most dealerships don't carry every grade of oil. They prefer using bulk oil.

You could buy and bring your own oil if you want the dealership to do the work. Tell them you want the empty bottles back... that way you know they used your oil.

If you want my opinion (worth every cent you've paid for it), go for the 0w20... and try to find a good one. Not all synthetic oils are the same. Group 4 oils are "true" synthetic oils. Most off-the-shelf synthetic oils are Group 3. In Europe, they don't call Group 3 oils "fully synthetic"... here in the US they do. Red Line and Amsoil both make superior quality Group 4 synthetic motor oils. You'll probably have to buy them online... but you can go further on an oil change than with conventional oil, so you save money in the long run.

+1 to the amsoil. I used it first in my old dodge diesel I had throughout my high school/college years. I now use it in my '01 echo since I got it and it's still running quite strong. I got my xD because i was completely bored with the echo and it was just refusing to show any sign of dying in the near future. BTW, when I check their site, they [amsoil] recommend 0W-20 for all temperatures.

0W20 Full Synthetic should be used on all 2010 model xD's. 09 and older xD's can use non synthetic oil... I recommend 0W20 Full Synthetic for all years personally...
