Default First 42.5MPG tank

Well, it's kind of an achievement for me. I don't think I ever had 42MPG in anything I ever drove. So there. Screw EPA.

How accurate is the system tho...? I'd do it manually to make sure it isn't cheating!

On my last 8 tanks the trip meter was off by 1-2MPG compared to pump/miles, so this one is probably closer to 41 real MPG, but still not bad getting 400+ miles from a tank.

Congrats, I'm impressed but not at all surprised. My wife got 32 actual mpg on her first tank of gas and 35.5 on her second, and it's mostly city driving. Nice car, hey?

If it's an 11.9 gallon tank..getting 400 miles on it is superb. The most i've got on my xA has been 34mpg and lowest around 26-27. It's rare for me to get above 300 miles to the tank. I sometimes wonder how all you high mpg'ers drive.

I believe the owner's manual lists the capacity as 11.1 US gallons. Whether that's really a precise measurement is anyone's guess.

I always clicked off at 10 or so. Too chicken to go all the way to 11.

I am on my second tank right now (the first one from the dealer was only half a tank). According to the mpg display, I'm clocking in at around 42 too. Not bad at all for the break-in period. However, part of it might be because of driving like a grandma from Florida. I'm keeping the speed under 60 mph even in a 65 zone where people usually go 75 or higher. I'm also driving a stick shift after a long time, so I really avoid changing gears, which means that even when there's a lot of traffic, I keep a large distance from the car in front of me so that I don't have to brake to a halt and start off again. I think part of the fuel efficiency comes from the awesomeness of the xD and part of it has to do with my improved driving with an MT.

It's your driving style. If I'm not 'nice', I get 26MPG

thats impressive. I've been literally driving like a grandma. Hwy and city mix. the most i've seen on my trip meter is about 33. Maybe it has to do with the weather i guess. I think its around 40s here in Seattle. More air more fuel?

Funny thing is I drove my sisters Lexus ES330 and it's reporting that I was getting 36.7mpg (even 39mpg) cruising at 65mph in the highway. I think those were not accurate.

For the entire tank or on one downhill slope run?

Wow dudes, seriously? How in god's name are you cracking 40 MPG? I'm getting 32 highway (all-highway), if I'm lucky. Maybe that's because I drive a lot in Jersey.. and Selina just doesn't seem to like to go slower than 80 on an unsupervised highway...

(My car totally has me whipped).

CaptainJewbeard, the next time you fill up and the calculator resets, try highway driving between 50 and 60 and see what you get. I'm willing to bet you'll get something close to 40.

That said, I don't think driving those speeds in Jersey is really safe and I'll be that 75-80 region soon, once I'm through with the break-in period.

Well, I certainly agree that with any amount of traffic 80+ is not a good idea, but my neck of Jersey (and the time that I'm usually on the Turnpike) generally means that you have to go fast or risk being shoved aside by some crazy middle-aged woman in a Navigator or some-such. You know how it is :-)

For everyone here talking about *habitually* driving their xD at 75-80 mph, I personally find that kind of scary. My personal experience tells me that this car is not stable at that kind of speed.........
