Does everyone agree that we have small gas tanks?

I worried about the tank size before buying the XD, but I am getting about 320 miles per tank and thats better than I got with my previous car, VW GTI, and way better than I got with my Honda Element before that.....so I think its OK since I am getting that range in town....

Only 320? Ouch... I've pushed 400 out of my tank and AVG 360

Coming from a 94 Geo Metro 4 door hatch back with a 10.9 gallon tank I figured the 1st Gen xB would take some range hit at 32mpg epa and 11.9 gallons ouch! I was so used to 53mpg and 450 mile range in the Geo so getting in the 30's was taking some getting used to but with a little work I get about 260-280 miles on the first half of the tank (6 gallons) and typically get about 400 - 420 by the time the low fuel light comes on. You do have to spend a few extra minutes getting that last gallon into the tank to really fill it typically at the first pump shutoff click it will take another gallon slowly.

gotta be careful doing that.... repeatedly doing that can damage fuel sensors. i got this info from a scion master technician.

So would two clicks be bad as well? Topping off is a no-brainer though.

i've been told that when it stops, it stops, and you shouldn't do any more, less risk damaging something.

i'm not saying not do it, i do the extra .5-1 gallon everytime, but i fill up twice a week (100 miles per day round trip to work, gotta get that little extra)

After it clicks the first time, I pull the handle and wait for the second click just to make sure. Sometimes they stop prematurely and when you start the car, the needle isn't even on the full line.

Interesting. I wish I knew more.

I wonder what sensors he spoke of?

The only thing is the charcoal canister vent hose at the bend in the filler that I know of. Anything else is pretty ridiculous to be damaged by filling the gas tank up . . . sounds like a master mechanic with a sense of humor. I have a friend that says not to bother but it ends up being a 10% less fillup if I don't put that last gallon in and that translates to an extra fillup every 9 tanks. I suppose when you consider the size of Japan verses the size of the USA you may think that a 11.9 gallon tank is big enough but not in the USA when it comes to driving any kind of distance.

I find if I try to top it off more than about 50 cents or so I get over flow down the side of the car.

I also get about 320-330 miles to a tank but I have a hellacious hill climb on the way to work.

Sounds like the xD has a different filler hose setup than the 1st Gen xB. The xB will easily take a gallon more after the first shutoff. I usually just slowly pump a tenth of a gallon then stop and wait a few seconds for the fuel to go down and the air to vent then pump another tenth etc. until the hose shuts off or I reach the next dollar increment. I kind of wish I have a nice leak proof funnel or catch bottle to top it off with without spilling the fuel. You would think they would have designed it to overflow inside the fender instead of the body and all over the tire and your feet.

you have to wait 4-5 seconds before pulling the handle again, and i usually "hump" the gas tank with it, i think it creates like a "plunger" effect to the gas, where i can fit more in.

i just filled up tonight... 0.2 gallons at a time after first click, wait 5 seconds, while "humping" with the nozzle as described above. i got the full 1.0 gallon in. 26.25 for me to fill up from 2 bars.... it stopped on 8.8 something, and i got 9.8 into the tank!!!

You betcha. My last car was a VW Golf TDI that had a 17.something gallon fuel tank and regularly got 50+ MPG. My record was 903 miles on a tank. I regularly went 800 miles, though.
The only thing is the charcoal canister vent hose at the bend in the filler that I know of. Anything else is pretty ridiculous to be damaged by filling the gas tank up . . .
Ever look under the car? There's a heck of an evaporative emissions system behind the fuel tank... the thing is about the size of a shoe box. If you catch it at the right time, you'll hear the pressure pump running (about 5 hours after you shut the car off) to check that the system is sealed. There are three main electrical components of the canister -- the leak detection pump, the canister pressure sensor, and the vent valve. I don't know if fuel can actually get to those things, but you certainly wouldn't want it to happen.

Yeah I don't fillup and then park it somewhere and let the gas expand even more, I usually have to drive 20 miles before I shut off so it isn't full full for long. I think there is an air pocket on the top of the tank that can't be filled with fuel and then the vent at the top bend of the filler spout so it should be pretty safe.

Went 387 on my tank of gas an put this much in (see pic below)...Obviously our tanks hold a little more than advertised, must be a reserve or something...And this was without any pump spillage...I'm happy with my gas mileage since i'm running heavy 18X8 Axis rims:

WOW that's interesting because the spec says 11.1 gallon tank so something is not right there . . . I did fill up at a Hess station in Middletown once and kept pumping and clicking . . . what was happening is the hose was sucking the gas vapors and liquid fuel back out of my tank each time the nozzle stopped . . . I could have been there all night!

out to cylon xD's house and back. half tank each way. 220 miles one way. 440 total.

i averaged 33.8 MPG on the way out (surprising, considering it was "DOWN" the mountains) and 32.9 on the way back (climbing the mountains).

was a good three hour drive each way, i don't get to see the countryside that much. was fun.

Gassed up yesterday - ScanGaugeII showing 52mpg average for several trips with a total of about 100 miles. Last tank was 468 miles on 10.1 gallons.
