MAINT REQD light won't reset

MAINT REQD light won't reset
I've tried the instructions as given in the manual and a variation, and the light will not re-set.
Manual instructions are:
1. Set the odometer/etc. display to Odometer.
2. Turn off car.
3. Hold down odometer display button while turning key to "ON" position.
4. Keep holding until you get visual confirmation of a reset.
Tried this. Absolutely nothing noticeable happens. (I'm led to believe I should expect to see some visible confirmation that something is happening while I'm holding down this button, but I see only the odometer reading the entire time.) I've held down the button for as much as a full minute, with no observable reaction.
So I tried this variation, which I've seen on the forums:
1. Set the odometer/etc. display to Odometer.
2. Turn off car.
3. Hold down odometer display button while starting car.
4. Keep holding until you get visual confirmation of a reset.
Slightly different result: Holding down the button produces no observable result, but releasing it causes the odometer to display something that looks like "Sc-on". If I press the button quickly, it changes to "Sc-off". But this has no effect on the MAINT REQD light. I can't see that it has any affect at all, for that matter.
I've tried each of these two procedures several times. I'm about to go back out there and try a third variation where I press and hold the odometer button through a full shutdown/restart sequence, though I'm not hopeful.
Obviously I can take it to the dealer and have them reset it however they do it. (I'm assuming they use their computer.) I would rather know how to do this myself, so that I can actually get my oil changed someplace other than the dealership.

Thanks -- you're the first person I've seen say that rather than issue new iterations of "just read the manual."
After I posted my question, I tracked down an FAQ that says the same thing:
http://home.roadrunner.com/~icdedppl/faq.html#c8
Here's what it says:
Actually, I think the manual may technically be right. Our xD was in a major accident; we were able to reset the indicator using the manual's instructions before the accident, but I think we haven't been able to do it that way since. So it's possible there was an undocumented firmware update or a side effect of diagnostics done while rebuilding. All I know is that this technique works, now.
EDIT:
This may be a more reliable link for the technique described:

Here's what it says:
step 1
turn the key to the 'on' position.
step 2
reset both trip meters to zero. you can reset the trip meters to zero by selecting trip a or trip b and holding in the trip meter button for five (5) seconds.
step 3
after both trip meters are reset, select any trip meter and hold in the trip meter button and start the car.
step 4
continue holding the trip meter button until the "maintenance required' light disappears.

This post covers most of the scion oil change light reset procedures:
http://oilresetpro.com/how-to-reset-...t-on-scion-tc/
They also have an app that will put this procedure at your finger tips for free the next time you need it. This app is super helpful if you are a technician like me who does oil changes everyday. Nice to have all the vehicle resets available so easily when I need them. Hope this helps someone.
