Default maintenance req light

My maintenance required light blinks for about 5-6 times after my car is running, once I put it in drive/reverse it stops. Maybe I need an oil change, but does that light know if I need an oil change? Just never noticed the light blink like that before----no problems with the car, has 20,000 miles?
Any suggestions.

check your owner's manual. the mait. req. light is just a dummy light. it is simply a timer based off the cars mileage that is meant as a reminder to have the vehicle's oil changed. by default it starts to go off at around 4500 miles, usually you set it to go off every 5k miles as a reminder. it has no idea if the car actually needs any work done, it is simply just a reminder to maintain the vehicle.

The car starts blinking after 4500 miles and comes on solid after 5000 miles. To reset the light flip the MFD over to Trip A Odometer and shut off the car. Then turn the ignition to "on" (do not start the car) while holding the MFD button down for five seconds,

^^ chosen by voters? what voters?

i'd rather like to say... that information is readily available in your owner's manual..

Except that the owners manual says to put the MFD on Odometer and it has to be on Trip A Odometer or it won't work.
