Default mouse in the machine

I removed the mouse from the squirrel cage this afternoon. He was making the blower sound terrible & stinking up the place as the weather is getting warmer. I will tape up the wire from the fan connection in case I forget & try to use the fan tomorrow. All the pieces will remain in a box in the floorboard for now...
I need some advice, please.
1. Can I duct tape the flap, in the back of the area where I have no filter, shut as I think that's where they're coming in? I trapped one a few weeks back so this isn't the 1st.
2. Does the squirrel cage come off the shaft to make mouse debris easier to remove?
3. would adding a filter make it harder for wildlife to get in or would I just be supplying them with better bedding material than my proof of insurance provided?
I'm having a difficult time adjusting to the wildlife here. Any help would be appreciated.
