Default Noise during braking

Once again in need of advice/answers. Brought in my wife '09 xD (auto) about 20K on the clock stock (no mod. but with tract control), to our trusted mechanic to get the brakes check as it was making some noise. I know it's early for worn out pads, but she does drive almost exclusively on the city so I wouldn't have been surprised if it was the brakes. Now here's the dilemma, my mechanic said we still had 30% pad left. While I was driving the car yesterday, I heard the same noise, it's not the metal to metal grind but more of a rubbing or short screech before stopping. Also more noticeable at slow speed and the tricky thing is that it's not consistent. I'm worried as I don't want her driving an unsafe car. Any ideas? I guess I can have my mechanic drive around with me for awhile until we hear it again. But any direction would help loads.

One more question does the xD pads have the low pad indicator tab that rubs and makes noise to warn you that the pads are running low?

Every brake pad I've ever changed out has always had a metal slip on the side to of the pad to generate noise (metal on metal noise), and if the mechanic says you still have some pad left you can either ride the rest of the pad out or just change it out now. Are you feeling any trembling or shaking when you brake? If so the rotors maybe warped and may need resurfacing.

No no shaking or trembling, just noise. I guess will give it a month or then change the pads.

Then it may be just air getting in between the pads and the rotor, when you get it replaced, the pads, make sure they resurface your rotors too. Good luck!

My first xD, the 2009, started making grinding noises at 6,000 miles. I didn't change the pads/rotors til almost 20,000 miles. Rotors needed cut, and pads were gone they said.

I knew 6,000 was early, but was making the same noises you said.

My new 2010 xD has 15,000 miles on it, and I have not heard a noise yet.

Thanks Nguyen and General, ya I'll have my mechanic change the pad and resurface the rotors if needed. wonder if toyota used different stock pads for the '09 vs. '10 ?

i don't know whats going on with mine, but i hit 1000 miles today and when ever i stop or getting ready to release the breaks it makes a metal on metal noise, like a click right before the car goes, also if i slowly step on break it will make a grinding sound,
