Hello all,

I'm planning on doing my own oil change and this would be my first oil change of all time. I've been searching online and it seem so easy, so why not do it myself right?

Anyways I have a couple of question before I do it.

I'm currently doing the 30k oil change and was wondering what type of oil to use, 0-w20 or 5w-20 or something else?

Does the brand matter?

And how much oil needs to go in?

Don't have one? Get one. They are usually on eBay and you can get one from the dealer.

standard weight is 5w20 for '07+
0w20 is used under certain conditions.. again.. something covered in the owner's manual.

brand sorta matters.. mostly from preference.

Synthetic is recommended. Most "synthetic" oils found in the US are what they call "semi-synthetic" in other parts of the world. There are some true synthetic based oils like Amsoil and RedLine. They are a bit harder to find, although my local hardware store carries Amsoil. It costs more, about $9/quart, but it is better. I have gone as far as 12,000 miles on RedLine and my oil analysis from Blackstone Labs says the oil is still good. By the way, I tow a trailer quite often, so I am not particularly easy on my oil.

I recommend that you order a socket for the oil filter housing cap... search for Assenmacher TOY460. It is a 46mm cap, and there is a common oil filter wrench that is 46/47mm and they WON'T work! Get the Assenmacher one and you'll be happy.

The car takes 4.5 quarts.

BTW just to clarify it's an Assenmacher TOY640, not 460.

I run Pennzoil 5w20 dino oil in my '08 and it seems to run just fine. The key is to change it when it needs to be changed.

 

while i do agree with changing when it needs it, people with long commutes (at least i assume since i do) like synthetics due to the longer mile range it has. 3k miles comes up a lot quicker then i like. the weight opinion is odd though. my manual points you toward 0w20.

 

Well, recommended OCI is 5k miles, not 3. 0w20 implies a synthetic, while 5w20 implies either straight dino or a dino/synth blend. My oil cap says either 0w20 or 5w20 is acceptable, that's what I go by.

So far I have not seen a 0w20 blend for sale anywhere. Though I must admit I have not looked online.

I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong, it's juuuust right for you! I'm just giving my 2 cents.

 

ah, ok. to be fair, havent had to change the oil yet in mine so i havent had to shop for oil either. no harm done, to each his own.

 

i put about 100 miles on the car every day. i get it changed once every 7000 ish miles... or every two to two and a half months....
