Default xD commercial/video

I had not seen this yet and thought it was cool. Sorry if everyone else has seen it a million times on tv.

Their commercials really annoy me. Their only point is: "Hey, look at the outside of our car! You can paint it different colors! You can put some decals on it!" It's embarrassing for adult xD owners.

The car has so much more to offer. Maybe they just don't want to put it up against the Yaris, Corolla, and Matrix... but I really don't see why they can't at least say something about the car itself.

[quote="mcbrew"] It's embarrassing for adult xD owners.

I have to say that I'm an adult xD owner and I'm not embarrassed by this at all.

You have to understand that you may be outside of their target demographic. Their advertising is targeting the youth market. A lot of the people who fall into this market are into personalizing their cars, these advertisements clearly show personalized cars. That's always been scion's target market and I don't see that changing.

And no, I'm not calling you old.

The scion experiment as it was originally envisioned has failed. In hindsight, toyota might have had better success had they offered these cars as pure toyotas.

The idea behind scion was to counterbalance the perceived stodginess of the toyota line by creating a whole new niche of youth oriented vehicles. Trouble was, many older (typically toyota buying) customers saw the value in the entry level scions. How many older folks did you see driving the original xB? Scion scavenged some of toyota's sales and never really caught on as the hip trendsetter marque that toyota had envisioned.

The tC would have been a mainstream toyota. The xA would have been a grocery getter or first car. The xD is an oddity - not sure where or if that car really fits here. I like it, but I don't think it has found a "home" yet. I suspect the xD will leave the market or will be completely revamped in one or two year's time. That doesn't bother me.

Failed or not. Scion hasn't changed their target demo. that's all I'm saying. To complain about their commercials is pointless if you're outside the target demo. The fact that the commercial doesn't appeal to you is kind of the point.

I guess young people don't give a crap about features, safety, fuel economy, etc.

It's not that they don't care, it's that those features aren't in the forefront of their minds. When you're in a position to buy your first car, you aren't thinking "What's the safest, most efficient car out?" you're thinking about how cool a car is and if it suits who you are.

That's the difference between Toyota's marketing and Scion's marketing. Toyota appeals to the sensibility of their target audience, and Scion tries to get an emotional response from theirs.

The bottom line is scion isn't trying to sell a car to YOU. They are trying to sell a car to the 22 y/o guy down the street who's just graduated from college.

TV ads are meant to get you into the dealership/onto the website. That's where the safety, features, and fuel economy are listed either on a window sticker or on the stats page.

I live within 75 miles of Boston and Providence and this is a major TV market. I have NEVER seen a TV ad for Scion, and rarely any ads in print. Can anyone explain this?

My guess is that you're not watching the right channels. I'm pretty sure I've seen them on Comedy Central... that's one of the few channels I watch that has commercials.

You would have to be watching the channels which are already aimed at the younger people. MTV, VH1, Cartoon Network, Comedy Central and more. I rarely watch TV anymore so I haven't seen anything new from Scion.

I don't watch much tv either. So I think this is pretty cool. Although I would imagine if I saw it 20 times a day I would tire of it.

it feels like all this is being targeting to me lol.. from my point of view. Its catchy. but yea the reason as to why I got the scion xd was because its a toyota. I already know its a reliable car. my whole family owns one. But Im not trying to be say this in a bad way cause safety is important to me but saftey features doesnt cross my mind when it comes to this car. If I wanted an all out safe car. I would get another turbo volvo.

I think the major issue with Scion is that the cars dont live up to the hype... Scion is all about personalization, yes, and they do offer a wide variety of parts right out of the box... but where are the real performance items? The SRT-4 was a perfect example of a car that was done well (regardless on if you hate the SRT's or not, you have to respect that it was build purposefully and done right). I only hope that the next vehicles that come out from Scion come Turbo or Supercharged... Clearly the iQ will not be, but possibly the tC's replacement will be... Mopar offered upgraded turbo's/ECU's/Injector's/BOV's etc... Scion could Turbo the new tC and offer these parts, I am sure the market would drastically change, but I am also sure the people looking into the vehicle would be more likely to purchase it over some of the other turbo application cars currently available, like an Evo or STI... Heck even Hyundai figured this out with the Genesis Coupe...

sorry for getting off topic, let me get to my point, If Scion offered vehicles that were performance orientated, then the whole personalization aspect of the cars would work much better... as the Scion cars would be able to compete with some of the cars that are considered monsters on the road.... Instead Scion's "Sports Coupe" is compared to a Honda Civic...

Scion Should at the least offer 1 economy coupe, 1 hatch economy car, 1 larger car/crossover styled vehicle, and 1 Monster car...

thats my 2 cents....

what they need to do is gives us more parts to play with otherwise its going to fall and customers wont consider a scion when it comes to performance. Its soo sad for the xd that my mind is taking over telling me to get a tc and. and I kinda dont want one :? no offense. But many parts to choose from like turbo-kits or a stroker kit makes it more tempting. lol
