Default Is your air conditioning filter missing too?

I bought a Scion xD recently. It took me a few days to read up to page 143 in the manual, which says to check for a sticker in the glove box that says that the air conditioning filter has been installed. Well, there was no sticker, and after removing the glove box, there was no filter either. The dealer says the filter is an "option". Does anyone know if I need this or if it should have been included? Did you have a sticker in your Scion xD glove box?

The filter is only standard on Puerto Rico market vehicles...Your Scion dealer can order one for you...I ordered one and it fits perfectly. If you need the part number, let me know.

Yea I don't get it either. I was under the impression you'd get one by default...

Now I've found a long thread about this on the tC forum:
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=109592

People in that thread say the filter keeps dust and other junk out of the car. If you look through the posts on pages 5 and 6 you can find pictures of how dirty the filters get after being in place for a while.

I'd like to just buy a cheap filter and install it like the guy in that thread did, but it looks like I have to buy a tray first because I don't see one in there. Does anyone have the part number for the tray? Has anyone else bought one? How much did it cost?

The xD does not have a tray and doesn't need one...The filter fits right in to the opening and that's it. It fits perfectly...You'll notice on the right side of the filter opening that it is wider, this is to allow you to compress the filter and slide it into place as the left side of the openening is more behind the center console.

Yeah you want to put one in there asap because it keeps the A/C evaporator core from getting blocked with dirt and pollen.

I went and bought one today, too - $15 from the dealer parts counter. Same filter that goes into Avalons and a bunch of other cars.

You don't need a tray for it - actually there is no way for tray to be there - you'd never be able to pull it out. The filter has to be squeezed just a little to fit it in.

I cut out a piece a bit bigger than 8 1/2 inches by 7 1/4 inches from a bigger filter. It seems to fit pretty well.

I don't have an OEM filter though, so I can't tell you what the real dimensions should be.

This was an issue for the first gen xB some time back. Back then there wasnt a filter to be bought, so several people went to their local HomDepot and bought a larger one and cut it down to fit.

To the best of my knowledge, the filter is a dealer option that is only installed if the customer buys it. I wouldnt be surprised if most dealerhips dont know there is a spot for filters on Scions.

Autozone has the filter for the xB for about $12. It sounds like it is about the same size.
When the pollen count gets around 6000 in Atlanta, it makes a big difference.

Yes I said 6000.

Most econo-cars, Scions included, do not come with the optional Cabin Air Filter included any more than they come with the optional floor mats included, etc. Your car costs less by the price of those extras that don't come with it. Cars that sell for twice the price of ours sometimes DO come with those extras.

They really do help keep a lot of airborne junk from getting into the A/C and heater cores, the fan, your lungs... They also keed the interior from getting quite as much dirt/pollen pumped in through the vents.

The DIY versions are just fine if done well, the dealer's OEM filters fit perfectly but cost too much, most auto parts stores carry filters that will fit just fine, and their prices aren't usually all that bad.

I get my xB ones for like 8-9 bucks at Advanced. I think it's the Purolater one.

Is the a/c filter easy to install yourself?

Also, if anyone here used a filter OTHER than an OEM, would you please post the size and brand you bought? Thanks!
