Question 2011 xB *Windshield Creeking*?!

Hey everyone,

I just put 1,000 miles on my 2011 xB and at around 800 miles I began getting this really annoying creaking all around the windshield. Its not interior parts rattling, its legit creaking, like an old rusty door on a haunted house creaking. It happens over small-mid size road bumps. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm thinking of bringing it to the dealer and complaining. It is on both driver and passenger side and sounds to be coming from the bottom corners of the windshield glass. When I stand outside and push on the glass I can not reproduce it.

I see they are still yet to fix the "A-pillar" creek. Its normal.

Mine has been making that noise for years now. People have tried to get it fixed but with little to no success.

Mine makes noise anytime I turn, brake, accelerate, etc... But you can try and see if dealer can do something. I think they end up putting felt or something, somewhere.

Oh so this is a known problem? This doesnt sound like anything felt will fix, as I said its not a rattle. It sounds like chassis flex almost. Right around the bottom edges of the windshield. I wish I found wedge something solid in there on top of the dash against the glass and take it for a ride and see if it changes at all.....

I shouldnt be doing this on a 3 week old car.

I have this on my 2010 also. It's the black plastic cowl/panel at the base of the windshield outside where the windshield wipers are. The area where it meets the windshield seems like hard plastic and produces a squeak type sound when it rubs against the glass. Seems they should have used softer rubber. Cleaning mine seemed to help. I lifted the lip and swiped a piece of cloth underneith all the way across. I've been meaning to buy some felt or something to stick under there, the noise is annoying...makes the car sound like it has 200,000 miles already.

I can now confirm the creak is coming from the TOP AND BOTTOM. Mostly from the top of the windshield where it meets the metal.

That's annoying. Mine started going ballistic in Winter time, but I'm at 52,000 miles on my 2008.

Have you found a fix for this yet?

I plan on addressing all the squeaks and rattles this upcoming summer. I want to take a week off work and just go ballistic on my car, because all these sounds, flexes, creaks, and pops really me off.

I'm at ~17,000 miles on my 2010 and the windshield noise comes and goes. I know for a fact mine is the windshield wiper cowl plastic moving around on the glass. I've had the TRD springs(installed @ 600 miles) and rear sway bar(installed @ 1,500 miles) and after installing the rear sway, there was deff more minor body creaks, etc over rough road. It's to be expected I guess. I assume the front end of the chassis is taking all the abuse now since the rear is stiff. I have learned to ignore it. People think I'm crazy for hearing these things and comment how solid the car feels.

Got my 2011 ARM back in June and I am noticing this majorly now. It drives me nuts but at least I have upgraded front speakers and a sub so I can drown it out a bit. Would removing the cowl (if possible) and lining it with foam tape along the edge do the trick?

This is the same symptom I had a few weeks ago. I lifted the hood and moved the cowel plastic around and wiped a towel underneath it. My problem went away that very instant. I figured it was sand or debris causing rubbing. Maybe I'm not having the same problems as others?

Well I did hear it at the wiper cowl, but it also creaks at the top of the windshield. THat's my big gripe right there. The top of the windshield.

Have you tried messing with the cowl at all? I thought the same thing, even got as far as contemplating my hardwired gps wire was rattling around under the headliner. I think the sounds just bounces around since it's glass.

Wrap the base of the windshield where it contacts the cowl. This will fix it.

Go to Sears or wherever and get weather striping.. Its thin, felt covered, adhesive backed, and you get a lot of it for about $10.. END OF THREAD

I too started having this issue when it got cold. I would describe mine as more of a squeak like a mouse when I go over every single bump. I originally thought it was inside the dash but last night i thumped my fist on the cowl and it made the noise. I'm going to pull the cowl away today and clean it but due to snow, i can't get the weather stripping today.

Dark Gecko - why is this something to fix every winter? Do you mean you install the felt in the winter and then remove it in the spring? Why not just leave it all year?

Monty - what are you suggesting to "wrap the bottom of the windshield" with? Weatherstripping?

yes, just wrap the bottom of the glass...both sides, with felt tape. It will cushion the hard plastic of the cowl against the windshield. It will make it a bit more difficult to reinstall the cowl, but it will still fit ok.
