Default Horn Install (Hella Supertone)

I wanted to change the dinky sounding horn we have in our tC so I got some Hella Twin Supertone (part# 85115) which is rated at 118db, one horn has a 300Hz low tone and 500Hz high tone Basically leaving a binging sound in your ear if you are right in front of it

Safety 1st - take out the ground from your battery and this is a D.I.Y. so don't blame me and I take no responsibilities...proceed at your own risk!

now on with the swap...

Open your hood and you will see you horn infront of the radiator. unclip harness and unbolt them using a 12mm socket or open wrench.

Comparison of the stock horn and the hella

Comparison of the stock horn and the hella mounted

Since the stock horn used the bracket as the grounding point so I also followed suit.

Now connect the 2 positive terminals and tap one of the horn harness(which is a positive trigger) for the relay. (solder and tape or crimp...doesn't really matter as long as the connection is good)

Ok since this horn has a high current draw it came with relay(highly recommended eventhough our factory horn is a postive trigger)

relay diagram care of www.the12volt.com

connect the following:
85 - Ground
86 - Positive Trigger from Horn Harness
30 - Constant 12volts(FUSED - I placed a 7.5amp)
87 - Positive Terminal from Hella Horn
87a - N/C(no connection)

Here's my wired up relay with my fuse and ground wire(use of split loom is optional but would look nice )

I mounted the relay on the bolt(10mm) holding down the airfilter box next to the battery

All you have to do now is connect the fused wire to the positive side of the battery, ground your relay( I used the same bolt where I mounted the relay ) and replace your ground from your battery.

picture of the finished install....

Honk away guys and wake up all those sleepy heads on the street

Awesome! Thanks for the tutorial, Hubert. I bought some FIAMM Highway Blasters yesterday, but wasn't impressed with them. Would it be possible to record the new supertones...versus your xB's stock ones?

Thanks!

btw, added to the tech section. It'll be moved to the FAQ section in a week or so.

also...

^^^ looks like a robot or something... red eyes, blue mouth...

your welcome man glad I can add some tech. as far as recording the sound I'll see if I can do it tom...I'm thinking I'll be infront of the car since my friends now walk behind my car everytime they see me in it but yeah these things blast!

i thought the same way when I say it cause I have red neons on the top grill and white on the bottom....

Nice write-up! I'd like to hear the horns too, if you ever get around to recording them. I've thought of replacing mine, but I'm not sure if I just want to buy some new ones or go to a junkyard and see what I can find. Some old American cars have some serious horns!

I heard it fine. Turn on your speakers, perhaps?

i think the factory ones aren't that bad. at least they don't sound that 'F' note that american cars have. THOSE sound so wimpy, almost like like a loud whimper. My friend was being a butthead and blocked me so i blared the horn for a good 20 seconds at him and he said 'damn your horn is loud!' well i guess it's all relative...
