Default VVT-i plastic engine cover

Does anybody know if that plastic cover on top of the xB engine needs to be in place? It appears to me that with that cover in place, you can't keep the top of the engine clean.

The cover is just for looks. Many people have to remove them when they upgrade plugs or switch it out for something else.

Thanks for the reply. I thought it was just for looks, but I thought I'd throw out the question before I removed it.
