Default Full Moon alum. wheel covers=any significant Aero advantage?

Does anyone know of these "FULL MOON" aluminum wheel covers add anything to the aerodynamics of the vehicle in motion (in terms of creating better aerodynamics = more efficient forward motion) ?? Any/all information is much apreciated!

the only thing those covers are doing is increasing the amount of held in heat around your breaks...

I think the aero advantage would be minimal.
Not to mention, it would be something that someone could easily rip-off from your car= $.
I think I'll just end up painting the steelies a good 2-tone color.

why not stick with your buddy club's if you've still got'em? those are some light-a$$ wheels and are GREAT for performance and have the lowest possibly air drag if you're worried about aerodynamics.

plus, i wouldn't be TOO worried about aerodynamics. the xB's shape is very deceiving and actually has a very low drag co-efficiency which is actually considerably less compared to many sports based vehicles that are "aerodynamically" modeled. this because the xB only sees real resistance on the very front of the total body surface the xB has where as a sport car like a viper or vet for example have resistance throughout almost the entire total of body surface area causing more resistance.

the xB's only downfall is side swiping winds because of the side walls. but as far as a straight line goes, only thing you gotta worry about is the wind warping the supports for the lower bumper area *thin sheet metal, VERY easily bendable*. the windshield will be fine aswell, if big diesel trucks can drag upto 180mph and are much less aerodynamic then an xB is because of it's bed and biga$$ wheels and a tail gate acting like a big air brake, then our truck like front end and shaft like body that follows it will do just fine.

I dont own a xB , and I'm selling the Buddy Clubs in favor of a lighter wheel (not to take anything away from the BC, they are good wheels considering they are cast- better then most cast wheels out there).
I have an exterior aero mod. that I want to get done by early July .... I'll share pics here once its done.

if you want some ultimate light weight wheels, check out Jline. they use forged steel wheel bands with forged aluminum spoke designs and are all true 2 and 3 piece race wheels and are damn strong too.

well, here's your options

10SL2

16SL2

SDMSL2 *my personal favorite*

20SL2

6SL2

all available in 15" in widths of 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12" wide in offsets of anything you want between +25 and -30 *anything meaning +25, +24, +23, +22, +21, +20 and so on to -30* in any bolt pattern you want with any center bore you want and with any color your want.

a bit pricey though unless you don't mind paying for a quality wheel. in your size *15"* prices range from 400 to 500 a wheel it looks like. custom color is like an extra 50 a wheel i think otherwise it comes in the color shown in the picture from factor.

Similar priced as a Volk wheel.
Do you know wheel weight for a 15X6 or 15X7 wheel ?

I have Moon discs, but I agree, they don't really accomplish much, at least not at speeds you'll ever see on a road. First and foremost, however, I like the look, so I can't complain.

I'm glad I live in the woods, however, or I'd have had some crackhead steal them and sell them to a scrapyard, because they're a couple of pounds of aluminum between the four.

never been able to find a real weight for any of their wheels, however i have emailed them asking them for a list of wheel weights from them or atleast some general ranges of each size of wheel. so when i hear back from them i'll gladly post here for ya. but i'm going to guess anywhere from 10-13lbs based on the fact that they are forged aluminum centers and forged steel wheel band which makes for one hell of a combination.

No J-Line wheels, but this is still handy:

Yes, if you could post your findings about the Jline wheel weights, that would be awesome.

I have seen that wheel weight list before, and have it saved to my computer.

Its kinda funny, but it says for a 15X6.5 Volk TE37 = weight is 8.8 pounds.
I happen to have two of these wheels, powder coated white versions(not bronze) , and they happen to weight 9.75 pounds each. Not so sure on that 8.8 pound weight spec. , maybe thats for a bronze wheel ??? However, I couldn't see the powder coating process adding more then a 1/4-1/2 pound to the total wheel weight.

alright, got a reply back on the Jlines. aprox average between all of their 15" models is about 14-15lbs, also gotta remember, unlike the solid forged Volks, these are two piece wheels and are repairable if damaged. my 17x9.5 wanted size with the SDMSL2's is about 16.8lbs, thats damn light for that size and it's build.

thanks for the info!

For the price to weight (cost / benifit analysis) ratio , personally these wouldn't be for me. The are the same weight( 15") as a Buddy Club or 5Zigen cast wheel (quality for the most part) = which those wheels are $120-140ea. IF they were to break, bend, etc ... its a fairly inexpensive fix to go out and buy a new wheel. The broken/bent wheel ... well you can recycle it and get $14 out of it at the very least

Now, if your absolutely stuck on that look of wheel, in a JLine .... then there is no looking elsewhere. I mean, wheels have a hypnotizing effect on all us car dudes and dudets out there in SL land, and elsewhere.

you know what's weird is... i don't even like the spoke pattern that tha SDMSL2 has most of the time... i normally go for something like the 6SL2, but there's just something about those SDMSL2's...

Yes, I like that style also.. its a tuning-fork style.
I also like the 10SL2 , that reminds me of a CE28n wheel- not the 8 spoke version , but 10 spoke , but has a semi-deep dish to it.

I'm kinda shy about polished aluminum wheels, or wheels with some kind of clear coat over them. They are hard to maintain, and you gotta watch what kind of cleaning chemicals you put on them, as some can eat away at the clear coat.

i'm just going to take the clear coat off and polish it that way or just paint over it to avoid that problem. i'm expected rock chips in the dish in my area so i'm going to make them durable.
